Are the Rivian-branded DCFCs truly only open to Rivian owners?

If so, I guess that puts the final nail in my desire to own one. I can't stand exclusive clubs.

I was looking forward to trying the new chargers in Kingman, but when I looked for the cost information, I found Rivian's site claims they're exclusive to Rivian owners. I was hopeful that the site was just outdated, but it seems like not.

Gross.

As of right now they are Rivian only.

But....

Just picked up a used Rivian, this gives me more charging options on a couple of upcoming trips. Too bad their Driver+ is way behind BlueCruise.

I'm happy for you (really).

It's just that those chargers are going to sit there unused while the four EA chargers down the road will continue to be oversubscribed. I had hoped that Rivian would be less like brand T and more into being a positive part of the community. (I'm not talking about the owners--every one I've met has been awesome).

I agree with your stance on this. Rivian came into the market when we are still in the "push to switch" phase. I think it's important for all of them to help adoption as much as they can. Private chargers definitely doesn't help that, especially when the price point for the vehicles they sell is out of reach to a lot of people. I'm glad they are opening them up, but they should have done that from the start.

I understand that Tesla is an exception since their network was built long ago, and they really wanted their connector to become the standard. Once they realized that wasn't going to happen, they began the switch. Though I think they made that decision pretty late.

But yes Rivian owners are awesome. Tesla owners entitlement is still an issue, but as they understand they aren't so premium anymore. They will fall in line. lol

Agreed, it makes no sense for them to have been exclusive from the start. There are other ways to create an "exclusive-like" club (they could make it cheap or free to use for Rivian owners but cost something for everyone else).

The J1772 and CCS standard existed before the superchargers were introduced. T is only adding their "magic dock" now because they want some funding from the US government and don't want to be fined by the EU.

Be Aware! - There are a few Rivian chargers in Oregon. in Plugshare, they show as CCS even though ONLY Rivians can use them. Because they are in remote areas, this can cause people to get stranded. I raised a ticket with Plug share to allow you to filter these out. No action from Plugshare

I don't expect these to be exclusive to Rivian for long. They seem to have a "just like Tesla" marketing strategy but I don't think anyone believes they're really going to build out a nationwide, exclusive network. Especially if there is taxpayer money to grab.

Thanks!

I think that's something that PlugShare needs to add (a public vs proprietary flag).
They don't even have a Rivian network filter option, which would still be problematic but would be better than nothing.

If they continue just like brand T in their approach to "future-looking statements", "eventually open" will mean in a decade or two.

At least Rivian went with CCS and now they do have a plan to open it up next year. I am also hoping EVGO/GM accelerates there Pilot/Flying J rollout. Those will be open to everyone, even though GM is funding it.

I think Rivian had to go with CCS to be marketable at all. The landscape has changed so much in the past decade that being an entirely proprietary start-up in the EV world doesn't make any sense at all, so it surprised me that this exclusivity nod passed internal reviews.

Yeah, the Pilot/Flying J option will be fantastic.

I agree they should add a Rivian filter. You can hide them with the "Other" filter, I tried it with the Kingman Rivian chargers. Also I found the Quartzsite Rivian chargers are not in PlugShare at all. If I can find the exact location I should be able to add it, but it is easier to add if you are at the location.

Yeah. The problem with the catch-all "Other" is that turning it off also eliminates chargers that are compatible.
