I have had my 2023 mach-e since March and got the dreaded message on the dash-service car soon. called the dealer and they said to tow it in. It turns out they need to replace the shifter assembly. Has anyone else had this problem? I was afraid it was going to be a battery issue or some or the other horror stories I have read about on this forum, which I guess it could still turn in to! Why would the shifter go bad on a car with 6k miles on it? They say its ok to drive the car until the part comes in, but I am kind of hesitant to do that. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Sounds shifty.

Seriously though, it's not something I've heard of before and I've been haunting these forums for a while now. That said, they make a hundred thousand of these shifter assemblies and one of them is bound to be bad, so I wouldn't be freaking out just yet.

The nightmares you read about here are less common than you'd think (remember, most people never visit this forum unless they've had an issue), the HVBJB issues are definitely slowing down (and you have a '23 so you already have the beefier, harder to destroy box).

It's under warranty, my advice is to let them replace the shifter assembly and see how it goes.

The shift knob is a rotary encoder and a button switch. Susceptible to coffee spills. ;) Nothing like a transmission lever in ICE cars that physically connects to a transmission. It is an automotive-grade electrical part. By that, I mean your average electrical part with some additional moisture protection. If they say it is okay to drive, that leads me to believe the mechanism has thrown signals when the monitoring software is not expecting. Not sure if it is the rotary encoder or the Low button that is throwing the code. If you slam it into reverse (or if it thinks the rotary encoder did…) when the vehicle is moving forward, the car really isn’t going to honor that request. Also, you don’t even have to “shift” it into park. If you turn the car off, it does that for you.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.
