Everyone should be wearing sunscreen regardless
Wish I could go back to the 80s and 90s during my surfing days and heed that advice ?.

I have skin cancer on my face. Can a panoramic roof contribute to or cause this?
I have odd facial bumps that started showing up and about a year after getting my Mach e.
finally bought a full window cover for the roof. Car stays cooler and the bumps aren’t growing. Doctor said it’s just too much sun no matter the UV. Dunno. But they have stayed the same size for a few months.

As a personal preference, neither my wife nor I will get a car with any kind of "sunroof". Between the "leaks" and maybe even more importantly the constant sun, we just don't want them. With our lease of a 2024 Mach-E we actually gave up the opportunity to get a Premium at the same price as our Select because the Premium had the panoramic roof.

They seem nice at first glance, just like a convertible, but when you think about the fact that you have to constantly live with that choice, it doesn't look as good.

FWIW, I have used a screen for my pano roof (not the Ford one). It effectively blocks the hot sun, but I’m not sure about UV rays.
And thanks for the tips about those glasses. I have those supposed darkening glasses that never seem to change. Anxious to check out the Transistions and/or Zeiss.

Same thing here. I finally bought a screen to cover the entire roof. Sad because I enjoyed the feature.

Well, I was going off of old information, and now it seems that the answer for "all cars" is "it depends". But let's have a chat session with Co-Pilot to find the current information, shall we?

Asked: Do the side windows in a car have UV protection?

"Car side windows generally offer some level of UV protection, but it varies. Most car windshields are made of laminated glass, which blocks nearly all UVB rays and a significant portion of UVA rays. However, side windows are typically made of tempered glass, which provides less UV protection compared to windshields1.

While some car manufacturers include UV-blocking features in side windows, it's not always standard across all models. If you're concerned about UV exposure, you can consider applying a UV-blocking window film to your car's side windows3."

Asked: Do the side windows in the Ford Mach-E have UV features?

" Yes, the side windows in the Ford Mach-E do have UV protection features. The front side windows, especially in the Premium models, are acoustically laminated, which helps block a significant portion of UV rays. Regular glass blocks UVB rays and some UVA rays, but the laminated glass used in the Mach-E's front side windows absorbs even more UV, providing enhanced protection. "

Asked: Does the panoramic sunroof have UV protection?
" Yes, the panoramic sunroof on the Ford Mach-E does have UV protection. It features a special coating designed to block UV rays and reduce heat. This helps keep the interior cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter2. "
Probably explains why in all the road trip posts here, not one complains of sun burn.

Good point about sun burns.
It noted UVA and UVB. Now I gotta read up on those.

Transition lenses haven’t worked behind windshields in years as the windshields are very effective at filtering out UV. I use a pair of prescription sunglasses now that stay in the car.

Transitions has a lens coating option called XTRActive which will darken behind the windshield. Not as much as if you were outside, but they do get significantly darker behind the wheel. There's a new version out called XTRAActive New Generation that is supposed to get even darker behind the windshield. I'll find out in about a week how much better it is compared to the old XTRActive coating.

That said, I also have prescription sunglasses in each car as a backup.

I’ll ask about it next time I’m looking for glasses. Thanks.

They've had the old version available for about 10 years. New version just came out. Zeiss has a version called Photofusion X.

I think I had the old version on my last set of glasses and was thoroughly unimpressed. Enough so that I didn't bother this time. There's always hope though. :)

When it hasn't worked for me, it is usually because the optical department screwed up the order and the lenses got made wrong. One time they didn't even bother to tell me I had an incompatible order: "Hey we can't do XTRActive on a Zeiss lens, so we're not gonna do any coating at all." No call. I had a lengthy discussion with the Eye doctor about that and got the glasses re-made.
