how Long do you think that will take? They will take charging plugs away from Tesla owners and change them to rivals cars. If That’s what he said I guess so, but doesn’t make sense. I’ve seen rows of super chargers full at times. If I were a Tesla owner and go to a Tesla super charger to find out half of them have been converted to another type of lug wouldn’t be too happy.

maybe their units can be converted to add another plug and keep the existing Tesla plug but that seems like an awful lot of work.

time will tell. I still think a converter plug type would just be easier if it’s doable at all. Plus think of all of the people that have existing Tesla home chargers, still get some value from a Tesla tap.

Doesn't make sense? There is $7.5B in the infrastructure bill. Musk wants some. That is why he is opening the Supercharger network to non-Tesla's. Very easy to understand. He has a track record of huge utilization of government grants.

A pilot is underway in Norway, but Tesla's European network uses a different plug.

I suspect that either they will provide an adapter at every station, attached so it cannot be removed, or they will add a 2nd charging hose with a CCS connector. When I look at pictures of Superchargers, they have 1 hose. EA has 2. Musk could add 1.

My tap has been useful on a couple of occasions.
Used it at a golf course in a place with few charging options so very useful for journey back.

On a wine trail on same trip, so was looking at the ones that offer charging. Many were tesla destination so the tap made it easier. I drink from the wine tap and the car from the tesla tap.

Will never recoup the cost but as OP said, it's more about keeping the options open.

The reality is that you cannot use them without the network's software being modified, regardless of connector. Therefore, to buy a connector thinking you can use the network ahead of such a modification is mistaken. Since widespread use of the network by non-Tesla vehicles would be the goal, and Musk wouldn't gain access to any of the $7.5B without widespread access, thinking it will take years is probably wrong.

While I get that some think a Tesla Tap is a good backup for using Tesla's level 2 chargers, it will not be needed to use Superchargers.

I would not buy anything thinking ahead of time that it might work. and from what I have read it seems obvious that software changes have to happen to make a conversion work. Still makes more sense to me for an adapter either by Tesla or third parties.

thinking that this will be done soon is probably unrealistic. you have to apply for the money, it has to be doled out and then permits and supplies , manpower etc. etc.

Not to be glib, I have never recovered the cost of my hyprids, I just dont drive enough for it to make financial sense. (my 2014 has 32K miles ) Just something I wanted to do as a small part to reduce oil usage. So I think of the tap not recouping my cost but to have a backup just in case. Keep my options open. A $250 purchase is not an issue on this car. But that said would like to get a discount the way the taycan community did!

I like the TESLA MINI TAP. small and pricey. Looks compact and nice.

I bought one along with the brass almost a lock (sorry, hackers and lockpicking go hand in hand so I am a bit of a snob about locks) and the custom hard case. On a recent trip it was used for the first time and worth it. The hotel had a few Tesla Destination chargers and one J1772 charger that had a red Mach-e attached to it. We broke out the mini-tap and was up and running in no time. We arrived pretty late and kept it hooked up overnight (as did the two Teslas and the aforementioned red Mach-e) so it was at 100% when we left very early in the AM.

We told the front desk that if someone needed access to call the room and we would come right down to disconnect and park elsewhere.

Truthfully, most small locks are easily snipped and removed. Why waste the time picking it unless you want the practice? For anything larger I recommend locks that use a disc detention system. For a long time they were advertised as unpickable, but that is not true. They do take a different approach and more patience but most people have not practiced with them.

For home and places like storage sheds look for locks that are anti-drill, pick resistant, etc. The one piece most people forget about for homes is the striker plate and most of the ones provided today are barely better than cardboard. Look for Assa and Medeco. They are pricey but their higher end locks are pretty good. The run of the mill Kwikset and Schlage keep honest people honest. A bump key, drill, or a solid kick will defeat them pretty quickly. Smartlocks... no. Maybe in a few years they will be a bit more secure.

The mini-tap definitely has its place in the EV toolbox for anyone who will use their car to drive a decent amount of distance for awhile. It is small, even in the case, and sits comfortably in the frunk until needed. I had to reach out to the person running the site when I ordered due to something getting blocked on my end. Business replied quickly and was super friendly. Got everything resolved and on the way in no time.

I'm just messing with you, but I found that the Mini fits perfectly with the Ford Mobile Charger in its bag under the cargo floor. It also fits perfectly in one of the side pockets on either side of the cargo floor, so I'd probably leave it there if I used it often.

I bought the 80amp to future proof it. This is not the only EV I plan to own. An F-150 Lightning, for example, can pull 80 amps. I don't think of it as buying an adapter for the "car" but for me (or rather any car I might ever own).

Wasn't worried about the size because even the larger adapter still fits under the back cargo floor next to the mobile charger. I liked that the flexible cable offers some strain relief.

LOL. I bought it because we are still using the mobile charger as the primary at home. The RV has to stay connected most of the time so I just keep things topped off with the mobile charger in the garage. I had visions of not having the mini-tap when needed while the mobile charger was at home so decided to get the case so it can just sit in the car and collect dust until needed.

Once the solar expansion and panel upgrade are completed I will have a Charge Point Flex at home and then, if I need room, can leave the mini within the mobile bag in the car.

No and yes, but if you want to follow the NEC, the TT should be rated at 125% of the maximum current. Which means the 60 Amp mini. But as I already posted, I think the 50 Amp TT will handle 48 Amps just fine. Be warned: to meet NEC requirements it should be rated at 60 Amps.
