Thank you for the post. I agree this is a great tool for a peace of mind when you really need it.

Do you know what Tesla charges to use their destination chargers? I know we can't use their superchargers.
Tesla "Destination Chargers" are typically at homes, business, hotels, etc., not managed directly by Tesla, so it's up to the owner if and what to charge for use.

Future proofing w the 80 is if you are thinking about using this with a different vehicle in the future, not for this MME
Like the Lightning?

Tesla destination chargers are free. The electricity is paid for by the station owner, which is why you should check with them before using the station if you're not a patron.
If you call ahead and are nice, sometimes they'll say ok.

When the Superchargers are open to everyone, no Tap will be needed... This was announced 6 months ago.
Likely Tesla will add dual plugs like they've done in Europe, Tesla and CCS.

Of course, our CCS here is a combo unit, so bigger than what you see here.

Tesla Tap Mini in action at Mt. Snow in Vermont:

Ford Mustang Mach-E Tesla Tap does deliver! 20220115_121837

There are six Tesla plugs and three J-1772 plugs. The J-1772 plugs max out at 32A (Clipper Creek HCS-40) while the Tesla destination chargers are advertised as 16kW. Via a Mini, my MME is pulling 46A@ 212V. On a morning when the temperature was -6F, every extra ampere helped while I waited.

The mach e can only draw down 48amps at max, so the 60amp rated Tesla tap will cover you. If you pull up to a higher rated Tesla destination charger, the max that will be distributed out is 48 amps due to limitations of the MME.

Future proofing w the 80 is if you are thinking about using this with a different vehicle in the future, not for this MME

I went with the 60amp mini just bc of the smaller size.
I went with the 60a tap to charge my wife's MachE so I didn't have to replace my wall connector from my model 3. Lol

Please do the same when using this adapter if you can. Use J1772 unless the only ones available are Tesla plugs. Then, in that case, PLEASE take advantage of your adapter!
If the goal is to get the most cars charged, an argument can be made that OP should have stayed at the Tesla EVSE using the Tesla Tap and left the J1772 EVSE available.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’ Tesla supply a J1772 adapter with their cars? So any Tesla that came along could have used the open J1772 EVSE, but if OP were occupying that space not all later arriving J1772 EVs would have a TeslaTap to allow them to use an open Tesla EVSE.

I went with the Tesla tap mini 60amp. My bro-n-law has a beach house and drives a Tesla, so when we stay there its nice to charge right at the place we are staying. Will come in handy for future roadtrips with having the most options to charge IMO. Love the mini size, easy to store

Yes, we get a J1772 with our car, that's right.

You'll also notice what I said before the quote you highlighted:

" I only use the J1772 equipped chargers when there are either no Tesla specific chargers or they're all taken. "

My point was I'm trying to keep the J1772 chargers open for others who don't have a TeslaTap.

40 AMP 60 AMP or 80 AMP. What do most of you guys buy? Just curious. The mini is sure getting pricey. Right now I am on the fence with it. Guess cause we havent done any experimental trips yet. No charging away from home.

Don't buy the 40A. The 60A is plenty for the MME. But if you want to be ready for a future vehicle that might accept more power, go with the 80A.

I bought the 60A.

I bought the 80A, because at the time there was a report of an issue where if the Tesla destination charger is an 80A, the 60A might not "negotiate" the power properly. That said, Tesla did away with 80A destination chargers at some point. I don't know how many are out there, but I wanted to be sure never to be stranded over the issue.

Also, I didn't opt for the mini, as nice as the form-factor appears to be. I wanted the full-size because the additional length of "pig-tail" acts as a strain-relief.

I went with the 60a version because that's what my wall connector is set for. We have a 6/3 line run on a 60a breaker to the connector then the 60a Tesla tap mini to connect it to my wife's MachE. It charges flawlessly.
