After 4 months of ownership, I discovered that the rubber pads of the trunk look like this.
What could that be?
Not snow, not salt, not chemicals. Then what could it be?

There was a thread on this about 3-4 years ago. I'm not going to look for it but can tell you that the rubber is impregnated with a talcum powder type stuff to allow them to stay slick. When the liftgate comes down, it slides across those bumpers to position it correctly and when the two surfaces meet they have to be smooth/slippery.

This is not an uncommon practice. Many years ago (50?) all the way up to about 10 years ago Maytag did the same thing with their drive belt on the washer. Instead of using a clutch, they allowed their belts to slip until the tub got up to speed in the spin. There belts were impregnated with a white powder similar to this.

You do not want to clean it but if you do, it will just keep oozing out (might take awhile if you do clean it).

Mark, I missed your explanation on the old thread and bought something recommended on that thread to clean it. Subsequently lost the bottle in the garage. I will stop looking.

need to still clean the garage!

Every one of those guide/bumpers do it. You can clean it but after some time, it will do it again. Also, I have heard complaints about the liftgate squeaking and making noises when going over rough roads. It was fairly easy to figure out. Squeaky clean bumpers can chirp against the liftgate.

Insert various jokes abusing the terms "chirp", "squeaky" and perhaps a reference about something slimy being less annoying. (I'd spend the time to do this properly, but I'm in a hurry...)

Because you're a pilot??

What is that?
Haha, no, not a pilot.

It’s just some stuff I got from Amazon bought by the gallon instead of being ripped off for an eye bath full from the local motorist shops .
