The one on the left is Model Y and the left is Mach E. I'm starting to ackhnowledge the fact that the Mach E might just be too small for a family with 2 small kids.
I'm very eager to order mine but I think it's probably not a realistic car for me.

What do you guys think?

I carted my kids around in a Ford Escort Wagon for about three years when they were young. Everybody survived, even when we could not run the air conditioning in the middle of summer because engine would overheat........I would have loved the room in the Mach E.

That picture does make the Model Y look big. However, other pictures floating out there of the MY, not so much. Take a look at the two below.

It's hard to tell which is bigger because Tesla doesn't give figures for cargo space for the trunk with the rear seats up. However, I don't think it would be a night and day difference between the MME and MY. I think whether your family with two young kids could be comfortable with a mid-size sedan, a large SUV, or something in between (like the MME or MY) depends very much on your lifestyle.

My two cents on it are look how full your Lexus RX's trunk gets now - are you always at capacity or is it generally not an issue. Depending on what you think, you might want to prioritize the larger trunk, think it probably won't make much of a difference to you, or could even decide that you'd be better off with a larger SUV (e.g., an Explorer) with your space needs.

I've actually test driven the Model Y and the trunk is indeed bigger. in comparison, the BMW x3 and Mach E have pretty much same size trunks an they are small. If I had to guess the MY is about 32-33 cubic Feet compared to 29 on the MME, when you need to shove a stroller and grocery bags it starts to make a difference.

Model Y picture taken with a wider angle I think. It strechs the perspective

Line up the cars up side by side and the differences become clear. The Mach-E's 186-inch-long body rides on a 117-inch wheelbase, a bit more than the Model 3's 184.8-inch length and 113.2-inch wheelbase. The Tesla is broader-shouldered, however, measuring 76.1 inches across with the mirrors folded to the Ford's 74-inch width. Given the Model 3's more traditional sedan shape its lower roof height is no surprise, coming in at 56.8 inches tall versus 63 inches for the crossover Mustang. Despite that, ride height is similar between the Model 3 and Mach-E. It's 5.5 inches for the Tesla and 5.7 inches for the Ford, although that drops to 5.3 inches for the Mach-E GT. While Tesla has not yet publicized dimensions for the Model Y, we expect them to be similar to the Model 3 (other than height) given their shared platform.

Climb inside and the differences continue. With the standard solid roof, the Mach-E offers 38.8 inches of front-seat and 38.3 inches of rear-seat headroom; opting for the panoramic glass roof nudges it up to 40.5 inches and 39.3 inches, respectively. Despite its height, the Model 3 offers similar headroom, likely owed to a lower hip point: 39.6 inches front and 37.7 inches rear with the standard roof, or 40.3 inches and 37.7 inches with the optional glass roof. The Model 3 seems better for long-legged drivers, considering its 42.7 inches of legroom up front to the Mach-E's 41.7. Rear passengers, however, have more space in the Mustang, with 38.1 inches to the Model 3's 35.2 inches. Again, it's unknown how the Model Y's inside space will compare, but it will crucially be available with a third row, which the Mustang doesn't have and seems unlikely to gain.

Practicality and cargo volume is one area where the Mach-E has the Model 3 beat. With its bigger body, the Ford has 29 cubic feet of volume behind the second row, and 59.6 cubic feet with those seats folded. Its 4.8-cubic-foot frunk boosts space a bit further; it appears that cargo volume is not diminished on dual-motor models. Meanwhile, Tesla states the Model 3 has 15 cubic feet of luggage capacity, but does not specify how that's split between the trunk and frunk. Tesla has said the Model Y will have 66 cubic feet of cargo capacity, presumably with the rear seats folded.

The Model Y comes out just slightly ahead here with 66 cubic feet of room, combining space in the front trunk (frunk) with that behind the front seats. For its part, the Mach E's boasts 64.4 cubic feet of this same combined area. Ford also gives numbers breaking down that space more specifically: 4.8 cu. ft in the frunk, 29 cu. ft. behind the rear seats and 59.6 cu ft from the back of the front seats to the very rear.

So the difference of a shoebox lol. Not like that wide-angle pic was trying to mislead lol.

rather than guessing, I suggest you go look at a Y in person and an escape; the escape is a little taller in the back than the mach E but not much. Personally, that seems like plenty of room. How old are the kids? Other than a stroller and diaper bag, what else needs to get crammed in the back?

I'm sure it could potentially take more but the Tesla model Y manual says to limit the weight on the cargo floor (above the under floor storage) to 130 lbs.

Also 900 pounds of maximum cargo, including passengers. That's less than 5 average American males and no cargo.

Remember that another 4.8 cf can fit in the frunk too. That about offsets the lack of full height at the rear of the cargo are where the roof slopes down making it more of a hatchback than an SUV.

I just see that they pushed the rear seats forward. So that means when the kids are in the back seat they won't have as much room. Squished kids means fighting in my memory. I'd rather have the rear seat room.

You have to remember the Model Y was designed to allow three rows of seating, even if the third row may be ridiculously tight. This results in a bigger rear cargo area on Model Y, whereas the Mach-E is going to have a roomier second row.

I have a Y and just measured it. Hopefully this will help. I have not measured an E; I'm using the measurements in this thread for the E.

In General, it looks like the E's cargo space is slightly wider, but overall a good bit smaller due to the length difference. The floor is lower than the Y's floor. You can see that by the lip at the tailgate with the E. this will obviously allow taller items to be loaded, but will restrict the size of the "trunk," assuming the E has a "trunk". (I have no idea whether it does or not.):

I think the hatch opening is about the same between the two, although slightly wider on the E. The E will give you 8 cm more vertical room from floor to top of hatch opening, this may allow slightly taller objects to be loaded. That's actually hard to say without measuring both with the hatch closed.

The Y's back seat is spacious enough that my 6'6" buddy commented on how comfortable it was yesterday. He had more than enough leg and head room. That may or may not be the case with the 7 seat version of the Y. I'm pretty sure that model will have a rear seat that adjusts fore and aft. Also, the center seat in the rear would not be nearly as comfortable for a large person; the two sides have way more leg room as the center console limits the legroom for the center rear seat.

This is purely an estimation, but it looks to me like the Y's hatch is more "bulbous" than the E's. Many on here have commented on that as well, stating it looks better on the E. I think because of that there will be more vertical room in the Y's back with the hatch down. There really isn't a way to compare this until you have the two side by side... I can say from experience that the Y's back area is comfortable for two large dogs, giving both room to stand up and move around a bit. This is with the rear seats up. So: two adults In front; two big people and one small person in back along with two dogs in the far back.

As far as weight rating, the owner's manual only gives an example; the actual GVWR and cargo rating is placarded by the driver's door. My Performance model is just under 900 pounds. If you want max load carrying capacity the 19" wheeled version is about 1000 pounds. (Or so I was told by a guy who owns one. I have not seen the placard myself.)

The trunk area--below the floor--on the Y is huge. I use this area all of the time and it's great for storing stuff out of sight.

The cover is rated for only 130 pounds, but the above mentioned dogs weighed 220 pounds combined and no issues were encountered. I weigh more than 220 and have crawled in and out over that lid with no issues or flexing. I have no concerns about carrying more than that on it. Regardless, it would be less than an hours work to replace it with hardwood plywood.

Floor to top of hatch opening:
Mach E: 77 cm
Model Y: 69 cm

Width between fender wells:
Mach E: 104 cm
Model Y: 94 cm

Length:
hatch to back of rear seats:
Mach E: 83 cm
Model Y: 109 cm
Hatch to rear of front seats::
Mach E: ?
Model Y: 188 cm

EDITED TO ADD: I forgot to mention the second under-floor storage space behind the rear seats. It's five inches deep under the cover. I use it to store my mobile charger, charging adapters, spare tire repair kit and compressor plus a few miscellaneous tools.

MY dad used to cram me in the backseat of his MG-B.

MG-B does not have a back seat...

Man, i love that hidden space in the Y. One thing I wish the MachE had.

In all seriousness, having driven the Model Y, the cargo space is voluminous. It is very spacey.
