Went in today to have the 20k service and the 21P22 update performed.

Service went fine but as they were moving the car to the software update location the dreaded "Stop Safely Now" message popped up. They assumed it was in relation to the update so they informed me and proceeded with the update which loaded just fine. Went out for a test drive and the error message popped up again.

So..............

They decided to give me a rental and spend some quality time with my car. Enter crappy Camry from Enterprise

Well, I have a funeral to attend near Chicago and have to leave tomorrow for that. Not looking forward to driving an ICE with gas prices today but it is what it is. I'll take our F150 and leave the Camry here hoping they will get my car finished and the wife can drop off the rental and pick it up.

So I go to get a few things out of the car and talk with the tech for a bit. He goes over some possible issues and asks me about my experience with the car. Tell him no problems other than a few software glitches since I've had it. I purchased July 1 as a demo with 2000+/- miles on it and was told it was just fine and had the latest PAAK update at that time. He shows me the complete history of the car and I learn that it also had the front motor replaced due to a grinding noise and the pano roof was replaced due to a few chips when it was initially delivered. News to me on both counts. I wrongly assumed that they would have told me those things.

During the conversation he says worse case the battery pack will need replaced ($25k dealer cost, he says) and that the rear motor is showing some trouble codes that may indicate a replacement for that as well................or................it could just be a few software glitches and be all good in a day or so ?‍♂

This car has not given me one lick of trouble since I picked it up.....yes, a few random bugs here and there but nothing to write home about. I guess I should be glad it happened where it did and not on my trip to Chicago tomorrow.

All in all I more aggravated about driving an ICE and paying todays gas prices. I probably should be pissed at the selling dealer about not disclosing those issues but I don't know that there's anything I can do about them now. Oh, I did find out that the wobbly shark fin was probably due to not tightening it up properly when the pano roof was replaced and head liner was down................so I got that going for me:rolleyes:

Wow, so sorry to hear, that's a true bummer! I'm wondering if non titled cars don't have to have damage reported to CarFax, etc.? The same way that if your car is damaged in transit, you may never even know that it was, it is just 'delayed.'

At least it sounds like you have an awesome service department! Hmm, I would think that your car may just need the update that fixes the 12v problem, that's generally what the stop safely now message means. But if he's saying the rear motor is reporting trouble codes, that's a bummer. I guess the bright side would be that you get a brand new battery after driving 20,000 miles, if they do have to go that route! But I would imagine it is an earlier build with 12v battery issues.

Thanks for the heads up on the 12v battery, I call them in the morning and let em know about that. Can't hurt might help.

Good point about the repairs before titling.......I don't know how that works exactly either. Just bummed they didn't bother to tell me.

Sorry to hear this but if I were in your shoes, I would definitely take the rental Camry over my own F150 for a long road trip.

Much better mileage, you will not add 1,000 miles to your own vehicle's odometer, and minor things like possible rock chips from a long road trip will not be your problem.

Had they already done any updates before the warning message popped up? All kinds of scary messages are normal during and after module updates until they’re all reset at the end.

Fair points. My thinking (maybe flawed) is that if my car gets done while I'm gone will I be on the hook for the rental days after that? I dunno, forgot to ask. Also, if it gets done my wife can return the rental and bring home the MME.

Maybe I'm over thinking it and should just drive the dang Camry

I agree, but if, like the service guy said, it could be ready in a day from just software updates. If that is the case, you generally have to pick it up that day or at most the following. They won't extend your rental if your car is done, which is what I think he's planning for so his wife can go get the car.

First one popped up before the update, second was after on the test drive

Makes sense, but perhaps they will be flexible with OP if he lets them know ahead of time why he cannot pick it up same day? Worth asking at least, I think.

For sure, he definitely should. He'll burn insane gas taking his truck over the Camry. Hopefully they're understanding!

Had I asked those questions before I left I would be happier.

It was 5pm and I just wanted to go home. Plan to leave about 6am tomorrow and service doesn't open till 0730.

I re-checked my route driving an ICE and it's an 8hr day. I can leave at 8am local and still be fine. I'll call the service guy in the AM and explain my situation and most likely take the Camry. I'm sure it will be cheaper on gas but not as comfortable as the F150 or the Mach E

So your Stop Safely Now message popped up AFTER the 20k service but BEFORE the 21P22 update?

I hope they connected the LVB maintainer when they performed the software update. If so, and it loaded successfully and then you got that same message later. Then have them run a Full Self Test and hopefully all comes back green.

That ought to do the trick.
