Why is the wireless charging so bad?

I think it’s likely do the the distance between the actual charging unit and your phone. My guess is 99% of us have a phone case. This combined with the really thick rubberized mat probably make it too far between the actual components that are doing the charging for it to be an efficient charge.

My other wireless chargers don’t have that thick, rubberized mat.

I’m guessing Ford did little to no performance testing on real world wireless charging. I also feel the same way about Apple Maps and the strange issue with location drifting while driving.
so i even tried to remove my case and blast cold air and it still over heats my phone so quick that i get 0% charge

The phone's batt temp sensor doesn't show up as over-heating, it just slows the charge down. Induction is the same tech that stoves use to boil water, and the coil is on the batt.

People trying to compare idle phone wireless charging to AA / CP usage misunderstand what's going on. The MME's location is poor in both wireless and GPS reception. If I actually want to charge I use USBc. If I want to simply sustain the phone, I use the pad.

I am having the same issues, it overheats and shuts my iPhone 12 phone off. I have opened a ticket with the ford dealer and they are saying it’s a phone issue not the wireless charger… they have opened up a ticket but made no recommendations. For a 60k + car this is pathetic..

The technology is so common, I own some $3 wireless charging pads that don't burn up my phone. Why is the one in the car so inefficient?
I don't have the overheating problem but I have to tap and move it a hundred times before it finally starts charging. Then if there are any bumps in the road it stops charging. Curious: there is a $100 aftermarket version that replaces the Ford unit and can charge two phones wirelessly at once. Has anyone tried it?

Have the people at the dealership put their phone on the charger and when it overheats their phone they will become a believer. This worked for me.

Your phone is likely using a lot of processing power to run apple carplay or android auto, playing music and running maps. So your phone is trying to charge wirelessly while under heavy load. Phone has no chance. My phone even gets warm and chargers slow when I use a cord in the car.
I had a salesman at the dealership just put his phone on my charger, not connected to the mache and sitting still. After about 1 minute his phone was hot to the touch and stopped charging in less than 2 minutes.

I’ll remind folks there is an update that reduces charging temps, see this TSB. You need to mention that TSB to your dealer if you want it fixed.

My iPhone 12 charges without shutting down (I have the update). It gets warm but not hot.

My 2022 has the same issue with heating my phone up during wireless charging. I don't use it.

Except that I almost never actively use CarPlay other than to hear and reply to incoming texts, and when I use a cable charger I don’t have any heat issues.

in the rare occasion that I do use CarPlay for waze or podcasts, the wireless charger would maintain the battery level, but not actually increase it. The only thing it would increase is the hear of my iPhone.

Mine got hot and the phone shutdown this evening. It isn't the phone cause not other wireless pad in my house has caused this.

Would this TSB still apply to a brand new 2023 GT? I would think it comes with the fix already installed and I wanted all my ducks in a row before talking to the dealership.

No, 2023s have a different charger module. So it shouldn't have the issue (unless it also sucks).

Thank you for the reply. I'm hoping it was fluke corner use case.

If you have an iPhone with Magsafe, then this is awesome: https://twraps.com/products/magsafe-dual-wireless-charger-for-mustang-mach-e

I have had one for about a month now and it's worked very well and kept my phone charged even while using CarPlay on a roadtrip.
I bought this too, and while it's an improvement over the OEM charging pad, I find it still heats my phone up and charges much slower than my magsafe dock in the house. I also bought a standalone, Apple brand magsafe charger to use in my VW and it also overheats my phone! Maybe the current in the car's USB ports is a bad match for wireless charging somehow? (Talking out of my ass here, just speculating.)

Edit: here's an article describing the issue: https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a42361840/every-in-car-wireless-phone-charger-sucks/#

Best line: "The reward for all of this hassle is using wireless CarPlay, which is exactly like wired CarPlay but about three times more likely to fail inexplicably"

Hi, I have a OnePlus 9 Pro and their wireless charger and it charges the phone with Warp speed and the phone never gets hot but 2 minutes on the Mach E charger the phone is so hot I can't touch it, it really sucks and it has ruined the battery on the phone because of the overheating ? else I love the car ?
