Found this interesting and insightful on Ford's approach to EVs, but most notably...

"That new charger-locator interface will eventually come to the Mustang Mach-E, which is due for a major software update later this year that will refresh the entire interface displayed on the screens in the car. Farley likens it to an iPhone update, saying “the whole UX is going to change.” Farley has set ambitious goals for OTA software updates in the future, part of Farley’s push to rethink cars as “digital vehicles,” but it’s off to a slow start. “We’re still not shipping enough software to the car,” he says. Field, coming off stints from Apple and Tesla, has begun to improve things.

“We had some difficulties with BlueCruise when Doug got here,” Farley says, discussing Ford’s level 2 driver-assistance system, which was released as a software update for vehicles that had the right hardware. “We had designed the over-the-air update for BlueCruise in three different tranches, and that just was not going to work. So we’ve simplified it down. We’re getting a lot of BlueCruise downloads now.”

At least the man at the top knows they've gotta get better in this regard. Other things that caught my eye:

  1. They expect to run out of tax credits late this year/early next. Heavy lobbying to up the bar.
  2. Android based Sync will not be backwards compatible with cars shipping with Sync4A
  3. Battery capacity is the main limiter to 150k production rate for Lightning.
  4. They're prioritizing chips for EVs over other cars in their lineup.

Very interesting read. Nilay at The Verge is a big Ford fan from what I've heard him say on the podcast. And hearing Farley talk, you know he's a very intelligent guy who knows how important software and processors are to the future of vehicles.

Curious about this new UX for the Mach E. One would have to assume the Lightning would get that, too. Only makes sense for their Sync 4A cars to have software parity.

Can’t wait for the total refresh, that’s great news. Hopefully that brings a more fluid and responsive UI.

Very interesting, thanks.

His comment on the tax credits surprised me. With the Lightning's launch I would think Ford would run out of credits as early as Q2, Q3, though I suppose Q3 counts as "late this year."

Also, it makes me feel good that the Ford CEO knows what a line lock is, lol.

Yeah Nilay has a Ford Raptor and has written about using ForScan to change things on it

I read that the official Lightning launch is today. It would be informative to know how many Mach-E owners have reservations for the Lightning.

I’d be shocked if Ford hits 200K before 3Q, in which case all deliveries through 4Q would be eligible for the credit.

Farley is a car guy first and foremost, he races vintage cars and has his own ‘64 AC Cobra among others. Yeah, even though he’s a road racer he knows a thing or three about line locks. That’s why car guys/gals cheered his move to CEO, he brings business acumen along with the love of cars/racing.

As someone who also has an order in, I hope you're right. :)

Yeah, thank god he replaced the office furniture guy (I can't even remember his name now). There actually IS a difference between making filing cabinets and BEVs :)

Question: What is meant by the below?

"Android based Sync will not be backwards compatible with cars shipping with Sync4A"

Does this mean that Android based sync will not run on the hardware currently being shipped on cars that are on the road today?

Or does this mean that the Android based sync will not be compatible with previous sync 4A apps?
