Why I'll Never Own Another ICE Vehicle. Will You?

Remember when you first got your driver’s license and you volunteered to run all of your parents’ errands just so you could spend some time behind the wheel? That’s exactly how I feel about my MMEGT, residing in the garage for the past 6 months. On the practical side, it’s the perfect vehicle for me; on the rare occasion I take a road trip, my wife’s Audi A6 diesel fills the bill so I don't deal with range anxiety. I can charge the MMEGT on the Grizzl-e level 2 in the garage, and it’s managed a thrifty 2.9 M/kwh.
But the real reason I’ll never have another ICE machine is the EV driving experience, and I’ll credit that to one factor—torque. My dual motors respond instantly to throttle input, and there’s no waiting for an ICE engine to spool up and no waiting for a transmission to find the RPM sweet spot. Mash the go-pedal to the floor, and the acceleration is instant; I liken the experience to being in a space ship and being sucked into a black hole. As a result, even basic EV’s are quick. And my MMEGT is pleasingly fast. I once owned a Dodge Viper and it was fast, but this car simply feels faster. This is the 10th Mustang I've owned (including a Shelby GT500), and it's the most fun to drive.
My MMEGT is a little buggy and I’m still not crazy about its styling, but I still have a goofy grin every time I’m behind the wheel. That’s just one man’s opinion.

Agree on all these points except taking the diesel on road trips. The Mach-E is a great road trip vehicle too! (providing your route is good with fast charging, which isn't exclusive to MME)

I never say never but still not ready to part with my 19 year old Dodge Ram. Have been thinking about replacing it with a Maverick but the markups on those are outrageous!! Used to have a SRT Charger which had much higher top end speed but our MME is just as much fun to drive and no need for 93 Octane gas!!

We have family in New Mexico, 700 miles away. The Audi TDI make the trip on one tank of fuel. I'd have to make 3 stops in the Mustang.

The range on diesels is hard to beat. The problem is they way outpace my range, lol. Since we have to stop anyway for food, bathroom, etc, might as well find a charger at the same time. Well, that's the idea anyway. We're planning our first road trip in the Mach E for August, so we'll see how that works.

I agree with never buying another ICE vehicle. I love the driving experience of MME and the convenience of home charging. I still enjoy driving the MME now as much as I did when I first got it

My son will get my Trans Am someday and I'll get a Vette. Probably used so it will be gas powered.

My GTPE is on for warranty work so I’m borrowing a Lincoln Corsair for the week.

I’ll really have a hard time going back to gas powered.

It’s a 2021 and feels so…… unrefined. The whole car vibrates from the engine all the time. Delay when hitting the gas. Transmission feels so slow and clunky every time it shifts.

I feel spoiled in the GTPE and not sure I could go back.

I notice nobody said anything about the environment. Good, because EVs are just better cars, regardless of whatever environmental impact there is (or isn't). I agree with all the previous posts about the MME and EVs in general: they are simply better.

EVs are better in every way except refueling and road trip range, but even then there are significant advantages. Like never needing to go to another gas station, because I charge in our garage.

It is always ready to go (I keep my car between 80% and 90% charge) and never have to make an unscheduled stop at a gas station because the car needs gas. I had that happen in my wife's car - I was going out, and didn't realize the tank was almost empty. Crap! I had to make an extra stop. What a PIA. That never happens in my MME.

On road trips, yes, range is not good and charging takes a lot longer. Those are the negatives, but they can be managed. Planning out the trip isn't a bad thing, actually. And charging while peeing is not a bad thing. In many cases, the car is ready before I am, especially if food is involved.

I want to replace my wife's car with a EV, but right now that road trip range issue is just too significant. Charger congestion is a real problem, and it will be getting worse, not better. We need a 600 mile highway range SUV and then nobody will ever need a ICE car even for road trips. It will happen within the next 10 years, without a doubt.

Then the ICE will be dead. Sad as it is, and not because of any other reason than it is better, faster, stronger.

Well, there is cost, range, charging and weight.

I don’t think we can solve all of those, despite working on the technology for over 100 years.

But for now, they’ve hit the “good enough of a compromise” level.

I take alot of road trips with legs that can last as long as 1400 miles in one go. To go completely EV need a few things in place.

-Charging stations as common as gas stations. Ever go out west in Texas, travel the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana? I love national parks and lots of good ones are remote. Be nice to plan a trip where you want to go, NOT the route you need to take for charging.

-charge faster. Ideally it would take 5 to 10 minutes to fully charge, similar to current gas times. Twenty minutes would be a decent goal. That should be acceptable.

-charging congestion. The longer it takes to charge, more likely for wasted time at a station.

-eliminate battery degrade. I suspect lots of fast charging would exasperat it.

Would be nice to have a 600 mile range, but with the above issues solved I don't think it is necessary. I hope in the future batteries would be phased out and we can use super capacitors instead.

Anyways, I plan on keeping a "classic" ice car for motor racing. Really wouldn't mind a new corvette or rs6 avant, but any sporty car would do.

I have never been a "car guy." Prior to my MME I drove a stick shift Fiat 500. Never gave a care about anything with cars besides to get me to where I need to go.
Since having my MME I have absolutely loved the experience of the EV life. I have read more about cars then I ever have in my life. The technology and science behind them is amazing. The ride is incredible. Will never go back to ICE, ever : )

I would never buy another new ICE car, EVs are just to good. I think there is something to be said about ICE high performance vehicles though.

My first EV was a 2016 BMW i3. I had been watching the EV space for a little while, but the reason I pulled the trigger was PRICE! I wound up paying $215/month for a lease on a $50k car! (BMW was about to come out with the larger size battery version & was giving these things away)
When I compared the money I was paying for gas on my prior car (Mazda CX-5) vs cost to fuel the i3, I was actually paying less than $100/month to lease the i3. And this was before I got solar panels!
After going solar I am paying 10% of the operational cost I had been paying for gas vehicles. (NOTE: This was based on i3 cost. I have not done the calculation for the GTPE but I'm expecting it to come in around 20-25%, cause, you know, mass (and lead foot-syndrome).
I absolutely believe EVs are better for the environment, but I didn't buy an EV to BE green, rather to SAVE green (in my wallet)???
