I'm taking my '21 Premium in on Friday (assuming the part arrives) to replace the heater, a $1600+ repair. It was diagnosed as defective in the spring, but I delayed the repair because I was unsure about keeping the car under the Ford Options Plan. I've decided to keep it, and now that the weather is getting colder in WNY, it's necessary.

Last winter, on long drives below 30°, the cabin would get chilly with cool air blowing from the vents, although it would warm while charging. This year, the issue starts at temperatures below 50°, and the cabin doesn't always warm up when plugged in. The problem has worsened over time.

Does anyone know if the replacement will be the original 5kw heater or a newer 7kw heater? The Ford parts department couldn't confirm the specs.

Mine gets too hot for me personally with anything over 72 degrees. I live in the northeast of the US.

This may be totally basic, but did you check your climate settings to make sure the Heat button is on.

Is that a warranty repair?

5kW only. Mach Lee did a writeup on this and the 7.5kW has a new plumbing system that is not reto for the 5kW system

I'll add that any decent tech will be able to look at the coolant levels, how much power the heater is actually using from the battery (should be at least 5 kW full blast), coolant temps, and actually put their hand on the heater hoses and feel what's going on with temps to diagnose this one.

There are some metal (aluminum) pipe segments hanging on a bracket by the brake fluid reservoir, those are the heater hoses and you will practically burn your hand on one if it's working full power and producing 160ºF coolant. You can feel the loop warm up if you switch on MAX defrost and put your hand on it.

The 7 kW and 5 kW heaters are not interchangeable, so you'll get the same size your car came with. Only vehicles with LFP battery have the 7 kW heater.

Out here in Los Angeles, it obviously doesn’t get anywhere near as cold as it does in Michigan. But I’ve always preferred the Mach-E heater to ICE vehicle heaters because it isn’t tied to an engine warming up to work and I get hot air instantly in my MME.

Definitely have it checked out OP.

I have to say this post brought out the very best in good tips and points from MME owners. Why I continue to visit here weekly. Always something to learn.

I live in the Detroit area. I have a 2023 MME GT. I have not experienced any issues with heating the cabin.

I have a 2021 job 2 prem 4x. Last winter (Chicago) we got down to about -15F. This was the first time I ever noticed it struggling to keep the interior warm. Granted I had a coat on in case of getting stranded or in an accident so I was plenty warm (especially with heated seats), but I was paying special attention because I had always been curious how much heat it could produce. Something is wrong with yours, OP.

Well, the car was at the dealer today, and they called 6 hours later and told me it needs a new Aux Heater. Parts $ 1,300, + Labor: $900. It should be fixed in 7 days, then it's going on the market.

What are you planning on replacing it with?

A $2200 repair job to make the car completely functional again seems reasonable and should give you plenty more miles/years. Don't understand the desire to sell a perfectly working car after it gets fixed. But I do get it if there is something else out there that has been calling your name and this is just the impetus to replace it.
