I’ve been playing with this kit for a few weeks now and thought it would be great to share my thoughts on Facebook and other social media platforms. First off, this kit was created by RichmoLi, and it’s truly the first of its kind for this particular vehicle. I want to give him a huge shoutout for putting in the effort to make this product, even without knowing how popular it would become.

It’s important to note that this isn’t merely adapting a Tesla kit to fit our vehicle. Rather, it involves a comprehensive re-engineering process to guarantee seamless integration with the Ford ecosystem. This task is unique, as there is no precedent to replicate for the MME.

Compatibility:

The kit works with the Ford ecosystem and here are examples;

First in this video, you’ll see it working with the key fob assuming you have the Ford lightning key fob:

Second, you’ll see that it works with the main screen:

Here’s a video of it working for PAAK:

And lastly, here’s a video of it working with the keypad code using the 7/8 selections:

Installation:

Having installed a number of items in the MME, including ambient light kit, borla exhaust, the roof electric tint, the one of one electric spoiler, and of course, the front little pony…. I would rank this install on the easier side.

Not impossible to do it alone, but certainly easier if you had a helper. The kit consist of two replacement struts that can be easily removed:

Separately, there are two replacement brackets that the new struts will latch onto. These brackets are relocated attachment points that are next to the OEM slots.

Once that’s complete, you proceed to replacing the spring on the latch as well as installing a secondary latch; the silver latch is from the kit while the black latch is OEM:

Next, you go ahead and replace the upper latch:

Once done, you then remove and replace the bumper springs:

For the next step, you just plug and play the connectors and hook it up to power and ground:

The cables are all connected to a master harness that connects to the module.

The last thing is expanding the opening where the strut is by cutting the plastics slightly to reduce frictions since the new struts are slightly larger:

For anyone curious here’s the entire write up with videos embedded via YouTube:

Final Review:

I think this product is very well created and produced. The functionality is top notch considering how it’s integrated with pretty much all of the Ford ecosystem and native controls. Since having this, I have increased my use of the front at minimum 50% of the time. Previously, it just wasn’t as convenient. Considering the installation really took no more than two hours. I would certainly rate this as something a DIYer can easily perform. Do you really need this kit? Well, do you really need that extra slice of cake, it’s OK to indulge a little.

My post is not intended to debate whether or not this mod is necessary. I understand that some people and rightfully so may not find this mod valuable or dispute of the costs is excessive. Instead, my post is to provide insight on functionality and some perspective on install installation if you decide to pursue this kit.

Appreciate all the positivity and continued support. Let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll try to answer them in this post.

Your videos do not play. Does the system use the mechanical latch?

I tried a couple of the videos and they worked worked for me.

This is very cool, though the delay in opening the frunk is a little off putting. (But I do understand the reason for it) But overall, very nice.

It turns out that the videos are/were on instagram and I don’t have access to any Meta products or services (no do I ever want access to any Meta products or services).

They're actually on Youtube and can be viewed without leaving this webpage. 😊

The only thing that I'm curious about is the modification of the front latch.

How does it work in tandem and what actually happens? Could you tell us more?

That is pretty rad! $1k for the modification is above my impulse buy threshold, but it is pretty attractive - I love that it ties into the existing control circuits so it works with the standard engagement methods (and benefits from the same safety features - shouldn't be possible to open it while driving, for instance).

A little curious on how the new latch and manual activation work. What happens if you need to access manually? Does the manual handle by the driver door still work?

Very interesting mod!

Maybe I missed it but how does this work with the emergency 12V shortcut from the front jumpers?

@SimonT , as usual very informative and detailed post. I know it took time to test and create all these videos and instructions. THANK YOU!

I know this mod is not for everyone, as any mod :) but people like me who use frunk daily looking forward for this kit.

To be fair, it was originally Instagram and then I changed out the video to YouTube. This made it a lot easier to play.

I haven’t been able to test out that function simply because you need a dead 12V to test. I can tell you that you can manually pull from the inside which will unlock the mechanism. Will probably do another video for that.

You are correct, you cannot unlock the frunk through native control when the vehicle is in motion, this is a Ford ecosystem behavior. The aftermarket kit relies on the behavior to control both locking and unlocking sequence.

If you manually pull on the lever by the driver side, it will unlock as well.

The only thing that I'm curious about is the modification of the front latch.

I’m going to place a GoPro with light inside the Frunk and place it in a manner so we can see the unlocking mechanism trigger in real time in my next video.

Awesome.
I would probably buy it.
My only concern is what will happen in case of 12v battery malfunction. There is possibility to open frunk from outside in such a case using cables in front bumper, so than one can install new battery. But with power frunk what will actually happen? Can it cut me out of only way to change battery or there is some solution to still be able to open it without power?

My guess would be that it unlatches the frunk but can't open it because the struts rely on the car's native 12V power. The emergency frunk release wires are only attached to the frunk release and only when there is no 12V native power. If the struts allow you to manually open the frunk lid once the latch is released, it's all good. 🤔🐩

@SimonT I think if you disconnect the ground lead from the battery that's sufficient to simulate a dead 12V battery for opening the frunk via the jumper leads. In case the struts don't allow manually opening the lid, I'd suggest leading a set of cables out under the car, attached to the +12V post and ground so that a live battery can supply power to the system. 😁🐩

There is a manual emergency release cable connected to the kit latch which is located behind the cover in the front bumper where the 12 volt wires are.

The power strut is not locked. Once the latch is unlocked using the manual lever it can be lifted
Could it possibly happen that unlatching frunk lock will not have effect with death 12V battery as electric struts when without power will resist more than original gas spring struts?

Also I see that one of the points of installation is "remove and replace the bumper springs"
Why is that necessary? I ask because new bumper springs on pictures look much longer than the originals. So they will also probably protrude much more and visual effect of that might not be pleasing. Could they be shorter?
