We are going on a long drive this weekend and I may end up using a Tesla charger for the first time. Anything I should be aware of? I've got a Tesla adapter and I've downloaded the app. From what I've read Tesla charging cables are short for the MME. Do you have to pull into the space to the right of the one you want to use? Seems kinda anti-social if its busy. Any advice or tips would be most welcome.

The Tesla chargers work great. Make sure you have an account with credit card set up in the Ford app. If you can use the v4 chargers. Cable reach is better and you will not require to use two spots.
I use PlugShare to plan my trips and select my stations before I leave home. I enjoy charging on the road and everyone has been very nice.
Enjoy your trip.

So of these chargers require the app to unlock the cable. Ran into this with a Tesla charger white labeled by Francis energy. There were clear signs near by so wasn’t to bad.

It's not anti-social, it's the RECOMMENDATION OF TESLA...

Just took a long trip and charged at 41 Tesla SuperChargers. Maybe 2 were long cable...

Not true, every Tesla Supercharger cable is unlocked...

You don't need any extra apps to charge with Tesla - Tesla and 20 other networks are right in the Ford app. And Tesla, along with Electrify America, Ford Charge, IONNA, and some BP Pulse chargers supports Plug & Charge - just plug in and your payment is handled automatically with your BlueOval Charge Network account.

I recommend that you use a local Tesla SC today as a test, so you are comfortable with the process.

If you have not used your adapter before, it may be a little tight. Make sure it seats all of the way on the SC connector - listen for the click of the lock. Taking it off may be difficult after you charge. It can take some force the first time you use it.

As others have mentioned, make sure Ford Plug & Charge is turned on and set up with a credit card on file. This avoids the Tesla app, which has advantages if you use SC's enough to want a premium membership for the discount. As for parking, if the charger on the far right is open, angle into that so you don't block access to other chargers, getting as close to the curb as you are comfortable (use the front camera to guide yourself in), or look for a drive-up charger, which are at some Tesla locations. Here's an image of my MME on the right charger - I use small ramps to get over high curbs, but most stations aren't an issue.

Before your trip, go to a nearby Tesla station that is in the Ford program and PRACTICE. Buy a few kWh from Mr Musk. You will learn how to attach the adapter securely, to get it into your inlet firmly, and to unengage everything completely. Access to Tesla chargers makes travel much simpler than just 4 years ago.

There is a new cable extender for Tesla stations advertised as being from a company called Hansshow. It is a 5' cable with temperature sensors cutout breakers in the cable to trip the load on hi temperature sensed. It is a big heavy cable. It sounds like a great idea. It is being advertised as being for sale for varying prices. $400 to $600. I tried ordering one. Your money goes somewhere in Asia. I got no confirmation they had my order and were shipping it. They tried to tell me they did not have my order, but they had my money. I contacted Paypay and they told me to ask for my money back. The money was at some other Asian company. They told me they would ship my cable in two weeks, then changed it to 4 weeks. I asked for my money back or I would file a claim with Paypal. They sent my money back.

I couldn't get it to come out until I selected the column in the app. But maybe I wasn't doing it right. I've used the ones at buccees all the time and never had an issue.

There are two types of adapters CCS (fast L3) and J1772 (slow L2), make sure you've got the CCS adapter. I've seen folks show up with the wrong adapters at fast chargers.

Good etiquette is to use the furthest charger to the right hand end, often there is room at the very end spot so you don't block a second charger. If that is not available don't worry and just use any spot, further to the right is better, but do what you need to charge.

You'll need to get close, might take a second try your first outing, but you'll figure it out quick. I usually pull straight in with my left edge aligned to where the cable is attached to the stand. Others pull in at an angle. Do what you're comfortable with.

As others have mentioned, make sure plug and charge is setup in your Ford Pass app, then you can just plug in and it will start charging. That is the easiest way.

You can also download the Tesla app and save about 25% per charge if you use their paid tier, for me the breakeven was less than 2 sessions, so if you're planning to use them multiple times it's worthwhile. Setup is easy, the app works well, the membership is good for one month, and you can cancel anytime and it'll be active until the end of the month. Just make sure to start the session in the Tesla app before plugging in, otherwise Ford app will start and charge you the higher price.

Electrify America also has an app with a paid tier. They used to be competitive on pricing, but I've seen their pricing going up in some areas.

Ionna seems to be priced well, no extra apps to use.

PlugShare is a great companion app, you can filter it to find the chargers you want, and see feedback to know if they are reliable.

I'll also parrot to go try it locally before your roadtrip.

Some Tesla stations have one of the chargers turned 90 degrees to the others and moved to midway along the stall. Apparently, it is a substitute for not having pull through stalls. I have used the one at the Tesla station in town without any problem. Did not need to take 2 stalls. I have seen a Cybertruck pulling a trailer use it another time. The trailer did block the aisle. Fortunately, the parking spaces across the aisle were empty. Allowing traffic to get around the trailer.
