Used MME with no charging cord

I'm close to purchasing a 2025 MME and have test-driven several. None of the three I'm most interested in come with the OEM charging cord (EVSE?). The dealers are not budging on supplying me with one ("if we get the car without the cord it just doesn't come with one"). Am I better off purchasing a used or new Ford OEM cord, or going with an aftermarket one? Is it correct that an aftermarket cord won't work with the Ford app?

Every charger reports charging in the Ford app, because it is the car's data, and you start or stop charging with the car.

The Ford Mobile Charger has no additional app capabilities. And it is a piece of garbage.

Those are junk, purchase a third party one, there are many EVSEs available.

Which charger you want depends on where you're plugging it in. 120V? 240V? Circuit amps? Do you want "smart" functions, such as being able to monitor the charge in real-time and change setting from your phone? Do you want something you can take with you and plug into 120V or 240V depending on what is available? If you are just charging at home, you probable want a wall-mounted charger. How many miles per day are you driving on average?

I used to (and sometimes still do) review EV chargers. If you can describe your needs, I can tell you what to get. Don't worry about getting the Ford charger... there's nothing special there.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I will mostly be charging at home, on 240 for the majority of the time and 120 on occasion, so I would like to have level 1 and 2 capabilities. I would prefer something more portable and don't plan on hardwiring the charger into the wall.

I've been using an Autel 48 amp for 3 years with no problems. Unfortunately our MME was totalled today. An idiot driving about 100mph ran into the back of our car that was on cruise at 67 mph.
My wife has a broken arm, clavicle and sternum. I had bruising to my ribs and leg.
The kicker is I had a cat scan done and the Dr. said I have a tumor in my kidney and it will need to be removed. What a day.

There are many threads on this topic. I never found carrying a 120v necessary. I do, but have never used it. You need the biggest, meanest hard wired EVSE that your circuit can handle to future proof the install. You also want to avoid a plug if possible because it becomes a failure point and why have it if you don’t need to?

I have a 60 amp 240v Tesla universal that is hard wired to my garage sub panel. That gives me 11.5 kW of charging speed, which is the most the car can handle. I get it charged in 1.5 hours at midnight. I only use the Ford app to instruct the car to stop at 90%. The Tesla app determines when to charge (midnight to 5 am). When my brother visits, he tops his i4 off pretty fast. That works well for my use case. But I have a 200 amp panel and my home’s developer was a drill baby drill fellow who ran the whole house on gas. But as they say in Montessori: you get what you get and you don’t get upset.

If you are charging 220/240 at home, you don't want to use the travel cord at all...
The home charger should come with its own cord..

Get a third party EVSE that’ll do what you want. Hardwired is preferred for home location. I’ve never needed my mobile charger in three years of ownership. The charging infrastructure has improved greatly since I bought the Mach E.

I'd recommend that you have the 3rd party of your choice HARD WIRED and not use a receptacle. I had a cheap "Big Box Store" receptacle melt on me. It could have been Much Worse!!! So, after that I had the new charger installed via electrician and hard wired.

Check with your local Utility as they may offer discounted Level 2 chargers. Mine did and saved about half of the retail price. (Charge Point).

What an awful day!!! I hope you and the wife mend up quickly and just glad everyone is alive!!! Thank goodness the MME is such a "tank" or it could have been worse!!!

The killer app is that you can set the amperage on the charger and you can swap plugs. There are other systems that do the same, but please makes sure that it’s UL or similar certified.

Wow! Usually those minivans are the ones doing 50 in the left lane. Glad you survived it. I had a friend who had a similar situation but on a bike. He crashed, broke some ribs, road rash and, oh yeah, a tumor on his kidney. He considered it a fortunate accident as he had no symptoms and would never have known about it until it might have been too late. He had it removed and all was well for many years. Hope everything works out for you. Get well!

I agree with the crowd - a hard-wired charger is probably the best option for at-home charging. A portable one to put in the car has a limited use case - road trips to places that only have a 110 outlet and nobody there has an EV. For that you can buy one on-line if you need it. I have used mine several times over the last 5 1/2 years (maybe 5 times). The Ford one has been notably weak as it doesn’t seem to last very long before starting to fail.
