My insurance company says that my Mustang Mach-E is a "Ford Truck". And when I checked my paperwork from the dealer, it also says "Ford Truck".

Why is the Mach-E called a "Truck"?
Are all CUV's and SUV's considered to be trucks?
Is the Tesla Model-Y (a direct Mach-E competitor) classified as a "truck" by insurance companies?

I have no idea. But your question is likely state specific. Post your state so others can help.

My educated guess....

Many years ago when the CAFE standards first came out, light trucks were exempt. In order to fill the market niche left empty by the demise of the full size station wagon, manufacturers started putting station wagon-like bodies on light truck chassis and the SUV was born.

Kind of silly for an EV but technically it’s still a truck and thus exempt from the CAFE standards.

They may now but not originally. I recall that was a somewhat controversial issue.

Kind of ironic it can be said that Ted Kennedy was the father of the SUV.

My Geico policy lists it as just a Ford Mustang, but the vehicle class says 4-Door Utility Vehicle.

IMO the only people who call SUV's a truck are people that have never owned an actual truck. Go get a yard or two of gravel in your SUV and let me know how that goes.

Actually, for the sake of accuracy, your post title should be "Why is the Mach-E called a truck, in California?" :)

But I would certainly ask my agent if truck insurance rates are higher, for equal-weight and value vehicles, than for cars/suv's.

And then decide if you want to argue it, because with California, who knows???

That used to be the case but in 2006 it was change to require SUV to be over 10000lb to get the exemption and pickup truck to be over 8500lb.
You are right that a big reason for the SUV was CAFE
