I was fine buying the car sight unseen, but dealers and service departments not even touching the vehicle is very disconcerting.

I know Ford is rushing to get cars out in 2020 for Wall Street reasons, but I need them to slow the heck down so they don't screw the pooch. I want a fantastic, we'll put together, well supported car. That's the whole dang reason I'm going Ford instead of "the other guy".

I now have reason to pause. Take note Ford!
Just wait for reviews and other owner(s) reports before ordering. Waiting another 3 months for this information isn't a deal breaker.

A good reason to get the car before the end of 2020 is that the $7500 rebate could be claimed in 2021. Getting the car in January 2021 means getting the rebate in 2022.

Does anyone have a reasonable idea when these cars will arrive? If were able to confirm our order this month, is the 8-12 week timeframe reasonable? I reserved a Premium and was one of the first 6k so I’m optimistic the 8-12 week timeframe can happen.

Last I heard was mid-late November for the first US deliveries. That was a couple weeks ago, but my sources were right about the order banks opening the week of June 22nd, so I tend to believe them.

Just purely guessing if 50k units for the first model year would be about 950 to 1k units per week at full production speed. Maybe more per week if production will be less than 52 weeks. So you can try to back into how many weeks you think you’ll be from there.

My reservation number is 1000439x and my time stamp is 15 minutes after the reveal event ended in Nov for a Premium AWD ER, so my hope is to get delivery by mid-late December.

I think you will be okay even if your car is the first EV they have seen. Ford gained a ton of useful data from previous EV and PHEV models that you can expect top quality product in the MME. Doubt there will be hardly any EV related failures that your dealer isnt able to handle. In fact, your car might not ever return to that same dealership again. These things are THAT reliable.

The plan for Ford Options (retail balloon note contract) is to offer the same mileage programs as would have been available if Ford was offering the traditional Red Carpet Lease. This means to have 21k miles per year you would select the 19,500 mileage option and buy the remaining 1,500 miles per year upfront.

If memory serves me well the max mileage is 99,999 for the term of the contract. So you should be able to buy as many miles as you need in your example.
Never leased before. Does this make financial sense in your opinion?

Well, that requires a longer conversation. But in short I would say yes (speaking only about leasing in the US, since I don’t know how European leases work). Double yes for an EV.

I have always had employee pricing and the lease programs in the Detroit market make leasing very affordable. Plus, I like getting a new vehicle every 2-3 years, with upgraded features and almost always being under warranty. Sure, I’ve always got a monthly car payment because I never really pay off a loan, but that’s the trade off of keeping my vehicles more current and less likely to need a major out of warranty repair.

For an EV, with the pace of battery and tech innovations accelerating all the time a 3 year old vehicle may feel really old when the contract is up. But... keep in mind that if you really love the MME at the end of the term you can always buy out the contract and keep the vehicle, you don’t have to give it back. So I think going with a Ford Options contract is a good hedge bet. If at the end I like the 2025 or whatever MME better than my 2021, I’ll turn it in. If I still love the 2021 I’ll keep it.

It depends on how you plan on using the vehicle. I would never lease an EV. I have owned mine for 14 months and have 34k miles on it so far. For me, owning an EV has been so liberating that I now take trips that I used to avoid with ICE vehicles. I used to think twice before diving anywhere because i didnt want to waste fuel and pollute unnecessarily.

Although by the time anyone gets their hands on an actual production MME to review, the window to convert a reservation into an order will probably have long since expired. Meaning having to wait until all reservations are filled and then trying to buy from the "normal" process (i.e. cars that show up in stock on dealer lots for general sale after reservations are filled). That might be next summer, or even fall, depending on how many reservations get filled vs canceled.

That is correct. It also gives one "more" time to compare the MME to other new(er) BEV, new technology and how the charging network is evolving.

Which is almost surely what I'm going to do now. I was never really comfortable with the idea of placing an actual order without first seeing the car and reading some actual reviews. But I wasn't sure that there might not be a way to do that, depending on how and when the unknown order process worked. And frankly, that's still possible since we still really don't know for sure how this is all going to work. But it seems likely there will be a reservation-to-order window that will open and close in the next few months.

I was mainly addressing your "waiting another 3 months" comment. I'm guessing that delay is more of a 6 month one to start seeing reviews of actual production vehicles in buyers' hands, and 12 months from actually being able to get one if passing on a current reservation to wait for reviews. (Counting from the order period that reportedly starts this month.)

You are right but they still want you to check in the dealer I would think once a year for inspection. I believe it is 2 years for Tesla .

With the potential Ford leasing program for the Mach E, what would be the expected payment for a $58,700 version eligible for the Federal Tax refund?

With the lease like from Ford, you would get the Federal Tax refund and so that would not impact the "lease" payment if you are eligible or not, just how much money get back/owe when you do your taxes.

(I'm sure they will be different options, and payment depends on how much down, how many years, how many miles, etc...)

I know, not an answer.... that said I would like an idea of a couple of possible lease options too.
