Exactly. I think the Model Y was intended to be the first truly profitable, mass-produced Tesla. In order to achieve this, the business plan called for just taking the guts and chassis of the M3 and making it into a crossover at a heftier price-tag. I think Elon even admitted at one point that this was the business plan. But the result is that the MY is just completely uninspiring. They’ve always been sort of lukewarm on the Model Y. Their comments about driving the Model 3 vs the Model Y are interesting, though I’ve never driven either and have only sat in a Model 3.
I think the biggest thing with the Model Y is it’s just a little bit less interesting than the other Teslas. The Model S was the first notable Tesla and put the company on the map (and it’s still a gorgeous large sedan), the Model X was the first SUV and had those incredible doors, the Model 3 made Tesla accessible for the first time to a wide group of buyers and from what people have written is a great drive, but the Model Y doesn’t really have a big first or some other claim to fame.
Maybe if the Model Y came out five years ago, the reviews would be different, but Tesla also has a level of competition in the EV market it did not when the last prior Tesla, the Model 3 rolled off the line in 2017, and I think maybe that has also rained a little bit on the Model Y’s parade.
