They have to pay people to maintain/update subscription based services. I think ~$10/month is quite reasonable if the platform remains stable, updates are fairly regular, etc.

That "update" part is the thing. If it's a feature that requires the automaker to maintain significant infrastructure (like self-driving that needs roads to be updated on a fairly constant basis), I can understand the charge. If it's for a feature that requires no maintenance, no way. Toyota was going to put remote lock/unlock FROM THE FOB under their subscription service.
