I left my charging port door open outside to charge. The door pin lock that holds it locked seemed frozen. Tried unfreezing it and tried to close the door, but the holder just fell inside. Wondering how do I get to it. Bottom seems closed, so I am presuming I need to get to it from the top somehow. See attached picture for clarity.

I have no real idea but if you remove the battery cover tray from inside, does that provide you with rear access to the latch mechanism? I have seen a teardown which shows it's hollow behind it. Someone with a service manual can chime in.

If that part dropped all the way down to the belly pan and you drove anywhere, it might already be gone. There is a substantial opening to the road at both front wheels.

Taking off the plastic panel in front of the windshield, and then the side plastic panel might give some access to see it, but to really get in there probably means pulling the frunk tub out. It's doable, there is a video here showing how to remove the tub.

Unless you are really into DIY, I would just tape the door closed with something that will not damage the paint (maybe that blue painters tape?) and let the dealer worry about fixing it.

BTW, the bottom belly pan does come off, but there are three types of fasteners and tens of them. I took it off it once, and hope to never remove it again.

When you close it does not stay closed? If you tape it closed does it go in gear? If so just bring it to your dealer as it should be fixed for free one would think. Should not be built just for Jays garage one would hope. Not the best in freezing rain this sturdy charging port door. Had a hair dryer out myself.

I just taped it so it doesn't hang out. Not the best design. Not sure if Ford Warranty will cover this.

I was concerned there maybe openings, so hoping it's still there as I did drive around.

Looks like there is a wire attached to it, prove closure, so maybe it's still there.

This is one part of the car i wish they would change. The door latch is finicky. You can't just flip it closed (at least on mine). I have to stop and apply just the right amount of pressure to get the lock to catch. Opening it can also be quirky. If you press too hard or too quickly nothing happens. Why this should be any more complicated than the door for a gas tank is a mystery to me.

Did you abuse it or were you just closing it? I would say they should help you out.
I was just trying to close it. Suspect it froze. Tried thawing it, but it wasn't locking in and ultimately fell off.

Hi Michael,

I agree 100% with you!

Mine nevers opens first time (typically about three pushes) and it's taken me ages to develop a "knack" which as you say requires exactly the correct pressure at the correct point. It used to take at least half a dozen goes!

I had a Mitsubishi PHEV prior to my MME and this never failed to open or close first time.

Happy New Year to you,
David

You were just closing it? Does not sound like you were abusing it just normal use and was defective so get them to fix it. It is a bit flimsy; I do not think they will argue that. They can explain the correct use if they need to.

Thanks for the insight that it can fall apart. I need to baby it a bit for sure.

A cover? Maybe a length of strip magnet folded into and holding a draped piece of plastic over everything? A DIY of this here. A cleaner charging port needs to be figured out here also so I can stop the hair dryer.

Warranty will definitely cover this. Take it in and have them fix it. Some double sided tape "Velcro" inside might hold it closed in a more pleasing manner than tape, until your part arrives at the dealer.

Thanks. Will try that. Concerned about paint damage on the outside too.
