After pulling 5th wheel travel trailers for over 40 years, I rarely look at a rear view mirror --- just the side mirrors. But, I do think the blind spot monitoring / warning systems and backup cameras available now are some of the most significant safety features the industry has come up with.

I used to drive B747-400’s around before I retired and at some airports taxing it on narrow taxi ways was more challenging than flying it in --- didn’t have any cameras on that wing tip that was over 100 feet away and if the clearance at the tip looked close, don’t ever turn away from it. Like all swept wing aircraft, the wing will “grow” in a turn away --- over 12 feet for the 747.

The main body gear are over a 100 feet behind you and when you make a hard right turn, they unlock and steer the body the opposite direction to the left so you can stay on a narrow taxi way. Would have been neat to have a camera back there and watch the 4 trucks / 16 wheels make the turn and how close they are to going off in the grass.
You needed to stick around for the B-777 ;), cameras everywhere. Flew an awful lot like the 747 too. The 747 is the only airplane I actually missed flying. And still do.

More on point. Side views always worked better for me. And the backup cameras.

Yep, it's sad to say but even all the aircraft I flew are retired and gone now. :(

Could be worse. My dad started out flying DC-6's and Connies and retired off the 747. He's still alive and kicking and amazed that the 737 flies across the Pacific to Hawaii.

I flew, in no particular order: DC-8, B-727, MD-10, MD-11, B-747. I actually really liked two of them. I flew the B-777 simulator in Memphis. Too far of a commute to bid it. A few guys I flew with at Tiger's flew both the 747 and 777, they all preferred the 777.

My defunct car list is just as long too and I liked two of those too. :p. Here's to hoping the MME has a long and successful lifespan.

That's going back quite a ways. My dad's era too. He flew KC-135's in the Air Force, then later DC-7, 707, and 727 in the private sector. And a Lockheed L-188 Electra.

I have a few, hope it isn't too much trouble.

  • Can you use a 3D laser scanner on the car so we have to the millimeter a model?
  • Can you bring a laptop and use it to hack into the car and dump all available data?
  • Can you kidnap this person for ransom of a copy of all internal Ford documents related to all design decisions?
Thanks

(I love you guys.)

Just have your crew kidnap the driver and car in one fell swoop with a ramp on the back of a semi trailer. You'll need to set it up at a railroad crossing with at least 4 blacked-out panel vans. and a crane with a magnetic hook. and guys on motorcycles. with RPG's. and miniguns on the vans.

Why do I have to think of everything?

I am like your dad, never started out on a long haul intercontinental leg with less than 4 engines turning.
A lot of my last trips were up over the top, straight North from DTW to Beijing.
When you are over the North Pole and look at where to go if you lose one, you definitely don’t want to be in a Twin like the B777.

I have been since 9a. ?
I think his buddy at Ford turned the tables and kidnapped HIM! Now we're all going to have to chip in to get him back and hear the answers to our questions!
