It's not amazing, it's totally ordinary.

Supply and demand have driven the behavior of both consumers and sellers since the dawn of time.
The amounts are what's amazing. Staggering markups, like $100K+ for a Rav4 Prime ?

Funny, I have never heard of general car purchases being over MSRP. And certainly never, and will never pay over MSRP. True some specialty/low production cars sell over sticker. Although it is comforting that the MME I bought is considered by some to be rare and the value is high, dealers are simply taking advantage of a situation. I certainly understand/support capitalism. I may place more of the blame on uneducated, lazy and impatient consumers who by participating are providing a market for these outrageous markups.

I saw gas Mustangs marked up $35k (on a $105k sticker) when I was in for service the other day. The Mercedes dealer had markups well over $100k.

Supply. Demand.

I hope this does not become the new normal, cuz stuff is getting expensive.

Unless I was being given top dollar for a trade-in, I don't see myself ever being willing to pay over MSRP. MSRP already means everybody involved on the selling side is doing just fine.

It's generally a depreciating asset.

How to stay in business if people didn't cave and pay ADMs? Adapt.

That's what I had to do when I was in business for myself and everything dried up in the aftermath of 9/11. I had to hustle, lower prices, and do whatever I could to keep it running.

Dealers have other sources of income that go beyond just selling new and used cars, such as service. Run promotions, etc. to get people in the door, anything to increase income. Adapting to market shifts are part of being in business.
The supply of houses is lower than the demand, so housing prices have skyrocketed.
Used vehicle inventories are at an all-time low, thus used vehicle prices are skyrocketing.

I'm not sure how adding 5% or 10% to new vehicle prices is not adapting to the market when they can get it?

Your cutting of prices was due to lack of demand, not supply

I won’t ever pay any amount of ADM, but it’s ADMs of the gouging variety that are obscene. An ADM of $10K on an Ionic 5? They can keep it, thanks.

It’s with a Hyundai dealer owned by the same as my Ford dealer, but waiting to hear if they will consider no ADM. Of course Ild have to like it more than the Mach-E to actually pull the trigger. At least it will be a 2022…
So did your car come in today?

I think the home buying analogy would have to state that the price of the house is X and the real estate agent is marking it up by Y and keeping the Y portion as broker.

Picked up my Premium two weeks ago ( after 8 month wait) from Sanderson Ford in Glendale AZ.
This dealer does not do ADMs or dealer installed extras. My price was MSRP less a $600 rebate from Ford. Such dealers are out there. Just have to look for them.
