I know it isn't a lease. But a $300 per month difference is absurd, and the tax credit can't be rolled into the upfront cost. Moreover, it would take a year to get in my case since I would have to claim it on my income tax.
Although, as some have pointed out on other threads, you could adjust your payroll tax withholding to account for your expected lower tax liability. That will help you with at least that first year of payments.

It will be really interesting to see how this process (and the lease/finance options) compare to the ID. 4 on the 24th. To me that is going to be a better comparison then Tesla for what the market will look like. Hopefully VW will release the finance info then as well.

Payroll tax withholding no longer applies since the change to a much higher standard deduction. The rules changed in the 2019 tax year.

Not entirely true. You can adjust your W-4 to account for anticipated credits over and above the standard deduction if you itemize your taxes. There is a really decent calculator on the IRS site, https://www.irs.gov/individuals/tax-withholding-estimator.

The increase in the standard deduction doesn't change the fact that if you're a W2 employee, you still have federal tax withholding and you can change those amounts to reflect that you will have a lower tax liability. And if you make quarterly estimated tax payments you can do the same thing.

I used that last year and nearly choked when it said that I would owe a king's ransom at the end of the year. I still owed at the end of the year, but it was less than half the amount estimated.

Was it just me or did anyone else notice the December shipments...so instead of a Thanksgiving Mach E it will be a Christmas Mach E. I don't know whether to say Bahumbug or thank you.

In many states that's not even legal though. Tesla already went through this battle. And for Ford it would be even tougher because Tesla was able to get away with direct sales in some states only because they had no dealerships at all (like Ford would still have).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_US_dealership_disputes

But in some states, 100% direct auto sales is legal. Perhaps that's what the tweet is referring to.
This is true - in Washington State there is still a legal issue with selling cars completely online - the Tesla legal approach got a waiver for Tesla only, so Rivian is having to fight the same battle. I contacted my state representatives and told them I expected them to open this up to every car manufacturer... this was last fall, the issue didn't make to the last legislature before the end of the year and I need to check on it again considering the dumpster fire that is 2020...

I am curious - since I have already confirmed my order (I have an original First Edition reservation - so I had to confirm 2 months ago) and my dealer now has my reservation - do I get to buy online? I trust my dealer - but I have always hated the BS add-ons and multiple meetings with the sales manager, etc. I am not concerned about markups or financing - but I would prefer a full online option... especially going forward. I do want a test drive... kind of torn...

Yeah, the vehicle that this is going to replace has a lease expiration date of 12/19. I really don't want to extend that lease by a month.

Yeah I also noticed the plans missing. And definitely true on the mock ups. They show what looks like @jhalkias's red Mustang (it even says John next to it), but they call it a "2020 Select!"
Need to change that profile pic as I changed to a FE. And, I wouldn't be caught dead trading in a Dodge Caravan.

Thanks for this. It takes a lot of hard work and we appreciate our efforts being recognized.
Thank you for this article - I caught this on my news feed last night and knew it would be a new topic today here!

I now have a new site to check on EV news!

Nothing will prevent anyone from test driving an MME once the dealer has their FCTP vehicle. You can still do that and finish the buying online. For many the time difference between the dealers getting their demo cars and the customer receiving their already order cars are many months. The worst case scenario is test driving your own car for those with FE orders anyway. If you don't like it for any reason, walk away. My bet is that the FCTP cars arrive somewhat before the FE's for most dealers. There should be enough time to test, then finish the order online if you so desire.

Well, the credit still helps in that you won’t be as severely underpaid at the end of the year. The point is still valid that the tax credit can have a benefit throughout the year (without having to wait a year for any benefit) if you properly estimate liability and what should be withheld.

CO is the same way. Tesla got an exemption because they have no dealerships. There was a bill in the legislature to open it up more, but not sure if it made it through or not as they ended up shutting down too.

I haven't looked at these screens in depth, but I don't think it would change the fact we're still officially buying the car from the dealership. Now, it could simply be a more online way of doing that. Buying from a dealership doesn't necessarily mean having to go in, test drive 3 vehicles, and do the negotiation dance. It's possible this apparent new system described here could simply be the online engine that handles most everything, but still processes it as a purchase from the dealer.

Whether it will actually do that or not is anyone's guess. As is whether the "In-Store Orders" and Machdrop FEs will use it too.

It's odd that each state has their own rules that have to be legislated, so frustrating.
It's also odd that the law is so specific as to exclude internet sales. What could possibly have been the logic behind that decision? Probably no logic at all just lots of heavy lobbying by car dealers. But that means they had to get each state to pass the same legislation.
I know my dealership has an internet department that handles the incoming inquiries. You can basically lock in your price and do most of the negotiation no hassle before you come into the dealer. I am not sure if that is exclusive to them, or to California or not.
