Next one is posted. Ford Mustang Mach-E: Charging on the Go

You know, every time one of these is posted, an email should go out to everyone that has a deposit on a ME. I can't believe the missed opportunities to keep customers informed.

Wait, what:
One more thing, if you happen to run out of charge all electric roadside assistance from Ford will flat tow your vehicle within a 35 mile radius to either your home the nearest public charger or an EV certified Ford dealership.
(Starts at 1:59 in the video, turn on the captions.)

Hmm does that mean the Mach-E is flat towable??? Curious minds want to know.

No, only flatbed towing is recommended.

Ooh! Are those excerpts from an owner's manual we've yet to see??

Interesting, then why in the video does it explicitly say "flat tow" instead of just "tow".

Edit: I see in your image that emergency towing flat up to 35 mph is allowed...

Also interesting that the video says "up to 35 miles"--coincidence that the max speed during flat tow is 35 mph and the max distance from Ford roadside assistance is 35 miles??

Interesting x2 that on the Sync screen there is a "neutral tow" setting...

Its more than EA: With many of the systems you can call the 800# on the charger, give them your CC info and they will activate the charger (I don't think any of them want to leave you out in a lurch).

Er at least if the station is networked (there a few ChargePoint stations that aren't networked but usually those don't require payment either).
Sometimes that doesn't work.

My charging horror story was a trip to Maryand's Eastern Shore in our 100 mile-range Leaf to a destination far from the next nearest DCFC. When we stopped at a mid-trip charger to top off, just in case we found the lone DCFC dead. While we picked up a little charge with the L2 in the next parking spot, we checked the company's app again: it showed the broken DCFC we were at and the one adjacent to our destination were both working. We called, reported the broken DCFC and told them their app said it was working. The bad news is it wouldn't reset remotely and they would have to send out a technician. While we were at it, we asked about the DCFC by our destination. She checked her system. The next DCFC looked good and she even rebooted it to run start up diagnostics. Great news, it looked fine.

When we arrived at the destination DCFC, the display just showed a big warning triangle. We called the company again and they saw it as working. They did a reboot, the diagnostics looked fine to them but then the display went right back to the yellow triangle -- no joy. They would have to send a technician here too.

We then limped home from L2 to L2, fearing the little "turtle mode" icon, until we made it to the nearest enroute DCFC that actually worked. You talk about range anxiety! Just try knowing you're more than 5 miles from a charger when the GOM switches from 9 miles range to blank and the charge now warning comes on every minute or so!

You're right @JamieGeek, they didn't want us left in a lurch. The nice lady I spoke with in CA looked at the map and didn't understand why they didn't have any working chargers around us but there were a lot of them right on the other side of that water she saw on the map (the Chesapeake Bay). Even in turtle mode, a Leaf can't swim.

Nice. That one makes it clear the 2-year access to the FordPass Charging Network comes free with network activation and has nothing to do with buying a charger.

Is it just me or do these two videos not make the Rapid Red look so good?
Those were not the best computer renderings Ford has used.

My guess: the script writers didn't know the difference between flatbed towing and flat towing and shortened it to the latter to cut a second off the film.

TIL that flat towing != flatbed towing.

So I tend to agree with you.

No DCFC on my old Focus Electric so any longer-than-a-tank trips involved only level-2. I didn't take many and the ones I did involved a meal or a walk around a mall with level-2's.

The Bolt does have DCFC. Wouldn't get an EV without it these days.

Absolutely. BEV without DCFC is a total non-starter. These days, it needs over 100 kW charging.

This is cool as it confirms that the Mach-E will have all the functionality Ford had in its prior plugins for charging in addition to some new elements:
  • Abiilty to set a charge to level
  • Ability to set the charge location prior to getting there (maybe: it doesn't say you can put in an address)
  • The other plugins would let you pick one of three temperatures (instead of "warm" "cool" etc.)
Edit: Yeah these are so close to the Focus Electric videos--even have the same guy narrating:
