The FFE has 3 receivers placed in the vehicle that can triangulate the location of the key fob. It even knows if the fob is inside or outside the vehicle. The MME likely has similar hardware.
My current Kuga (Escape) has a similar system

Correct, and we should know at this point. Other manufacturers are announcing specifics well in advance, meanwhile FEs are only months away from delivery. The lack of transparency seems shady.
Based on what @hybrid2bev said, we should hear some news next week.

Any idea what a Ford pass subscription will cost after the 2 free years? $20/year?
Electric America is $4/month for Pass+ membership. So if that’s included it may be ~$50/year depending on if For gets us a discount with EA.

yes, but the fordpass network encompasses other systems as well. I would also expect them to mark it up for the convenience, so maybe $10/mo

I hope not. That’s pricy.

Much less than that and the logistics cost of billing and payment processing would probably put the service in the red, given that they'd also have to pay the individual networks their cut.

We'll obviously have to wait and see - like everything else with this car.

Yes. The modules are the BLEM and BLEAM.

Inside antenna is normally in the center console. Put your FOB in the console, driver side, if you ever have an issue with the vehicle not locating the FOB due to low FOB battery, etc.

We don't know for sure at this point if Ford Pass will work on Canadian Charger network like Petro Canada who has an electrified highway across Canada equipped with 100 kW plus chargers, Flo and Le Circuit Électrique in Quebec who had announce the installation of 100 kW chargers. Electrify Canada for now with it's only 6 stations in Ontario and 3 in British Columbia well this is a no go for now.

Agreed, that's pricey especially since I know I'll rarely charge anywhere other than my house. Will probably be cheaper for me to "Pay as I drive" even if it's a little higher rate.

My '14 Fiesta is my first car with keyless entry and push-start ignition. It can detect that the key fob was left in the hatchback, like while you're loading groceries or whatever. In that scenario, if you close the hatchback, it will immediately unlatch so you don't get stuck w/ the key locked in the car.

I find this stuff fascinating so I checked the service manual for more detail on how it works.

There are quite a few antennas: exterior trunk, interior trunk, interior center, interior front, PATS (passive anti-theft system), left front exterior, right front exterior. (And of course the unrelated antennas for GPS, AM/FM/XM, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.)

There is a control module called the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) that is installed below the driver seat (item #2 in the next picture). It communicates on the CAN bus to other modules (e.g. the body control module for lock/unlock events) and has inputs for the vehicle-access related radio frequency antennas.

Anyway, another interesting thing I just noticed is that 100% of the modules in the Fiesta are flash programmable. That doesn't mean they have OTA updates, of course... but it's still comforting to know that this concept of firmware maintenance has been important to Ford for many years.

I don't think there are modules that are not flashable. I sure don't know of any.

All current Fords will try their best not to let you lock the key FOB in them.

Vehicle networks are getting fairly complicated. There could be 80+ modules (computers, basically) that live on multiple CAN/CAN-FD buses, with those buses connected together with a gateway. Hence the need for so many OTA... imagine doing a "windows update" on a multi-subnet network of 80 computers, each being a bit different. Updates are gonna happen often and take more than 10 minutes ;).

Great so my Mach-E is going to be just as annoying as windows and tell me "you have 3487 updates" every morning when I start it?

"This update is an important security update and you must wait 45 minutes for it to complete before driving..."
