I respectfully disagree. I don't think crippling a cars power on a 75mph freeway at the top of the grapevine, in the middle of no where is "safe".

Ford originally was going to use this software as mitigation until the new version of the HVBJB was ready. We all thought that was the plan until we saw the recall. There's no mention of that plan. It took a lot of people by surprise and a few of us are speaking out because it's not a fix, it's only a way to save money. A car can fail at the same rate as it did before. Now you just get placated a bit.
Oh I agree with you totally -- I am saying that NHTSA only really gets involved when there is a safety concern on the order of "the car loses all motive power" while driving. That is what could happen here. The car not restarting isn't really a huge safety issue from NHTSA's scrutiny under the law.

What the law and administrative purvue of NHTSA requires is different than what we should be expecting as customers as what is reasonable and acceptable in these vehicles. Ford did just the minimum here with this software update and just spread out the pain we will have at getting these parts replaced when they fail.

Yeah, I suppose he will hopefully say, I guess my point was are we really sure his second HVJB wasn't already 'near death' by the time he got the software fix, and I wonder if there would be any way to test that.

I am heatbroken to read this. ??
Thanks -- but really I look at this as it could have been so very much more worse. We're all safe and happy in our hotel, and my car is getting fixed on a very expedited basis as it seems clear Ford isn't happy to see a junction box failure 2 days after their software recall was deployed.

Here's some of the things that went well and could have been so much worse:

1. Part failed with warning this time -- and I'm getting a revised better part now
2. We are again all safe at our hotel
3. I got my car to the dealership without being stranded and without needing a tow
4. I did a DCFC a little ways before hitting the mountains (I could have powered thru arriving with little SOC in LA), and while that could have been the instant cause of this failure, it also gave me enough buffer to drive for a long period of time and keep the car on the whole time to get it safely to the hotel and dealer on local roads (quite a feat in LA to avoid all highways!)
5. My steak was very good tonight and there's a nice pool here.

when I saw him yesterday, he said that he’d been taking it easy on the car since the first HVBJB went down. ??
Yes I have been paranoid and not driving my car anywhere except local roads and taking it very easy. I do not think my second junction box was already fried before the software update on Tuesday from any over-use by me.

Note I have not DCFC on this junction box prior to the recall software installation.

The other news here is this shows us the new failed contactor codes that were added with the recall software, P0ADA and P0ADE. The service manual was recently updated with these new codes.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

When the ignition is turned on, the BECM makes various vehicle checks. If these checks are normal, the BECM sends a signal to the contactor to close and supply high-voltage power to the vehicle. The BECM monitors the resistance of contactors while driving to verify that they are free of internal damage. For DTC P0ADA:00, the wrench indicator will illuminate and the vehicle will have limited power.

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

DTCDescriptionFault Trigger Condition
BECM P0ADA:00Hybrid/EV Battery Positive Contactor Control Circuit Range/Performance: No Sub Type InformationSets if BECM detects high internal resistance within the main positive contactor.

Possible Sources
  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • High voltage battery junction box
  • BECM
The procedure calls for dropping the pack, checking if the the harness connection is fully seated, and if that's good it calls for replacement of the HVBJB. So in most cases getting a P0ADA code will mean you need a new HVBJB.

P0ADE is the code for a bad negative contactor, but the info is the same.
You know more than Bob Wondries Ford right now. They had no clue about this new DTC code. Ford's sending their field engineer tomorrow apparently to help out.

Sorry to hear this happened. I noticed today my build date got pushed back another two weeks today and I’m starting to wonder if they’re related.

Started looking seriously at the Fisker Ocean today …
Yeah that looks good until you think about where you would take that to get it fixed. I had literally 20 Ford dealers in the LA area to choose from, and a dealer with all the right tools and support was 10 minutes away from this hotel we're at.

Also, Fisker designed the car, but the engineering is being done completely by Magna on an unproven "white label" EV platform they have.

How were you able to figure out they had all the right tools?

Argh! So sorry this happened to you @scoopman but glad that you are safe and making the best of the situation. I didn't see in the posts here (sorry if I missed it) but once you got to the dealer did you try and turn the car off and see if it would turn back on, or did you not want to chance that? Limp mode probably kept it from welding right?

No you want the software update. Without it your junction box can fry itself catestrophically. With the software you have a good chance of making it to a dealer under your own power without being stranded

What happened when you turned the car off?
