Edit: Updated title to reflect Ford's recall number rather than the NHTSA's campaign number.

I signed up for recall NHTSA notifications for the Mach E and got an email today about this. It's a limited recall to up to 1,175 cars built in July and may have been a contributing factor for the two-week stop production in August. I would guess that based on the timing of this, few of the cars impacted by the recall are actually already delivered. Notices are to be mailed to affected customers by 9/19/2022.

August 26, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V646000
Rear Axle Half Shaft May Break Under Load
A broken half shaft can cause a loss of drive power, or a rollaway could occur while parked if the electronic parking brake is not engaged. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V646000

Manufacturer Ford Motor Company

Components POWER TRAIN

Potential Number of Units Affected 1,175

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022 Mustang Mach-E vehicles. The right-rear axle half shafts may have been manufactured improperly, allowing the half shaft stem to break under load.

Remedy
Dealers will inspect the serial number, and replace the right-rear half shaft, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 19, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S55.

Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

I wish Ford's recalls would be more software related than all these faulty hardware issues. More trips to the dealer :(

Thanks for sharing. One of the included docs reads:
"On July 29th, 2022, an issue pertaining to broken Mach-E rear right halfshafts was brought to Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group by product engineering for review. It was reported that on July 27th, 2022, Cuautitlan Assembly Plant identified 2 VINs with broken rear right halfshafts. One broken halfshaft was identified during squeak and rattle validation, and a second just before loading transport. Production records show Neapco Rear right half shafts where first introduced to production on July 18th, 2022.
On August 3rd, 2022, Tier 1 Supplier Neapco informed Ford Motor Company that inspection records show that between 2/14/2022 and 2/25/2022, Yecheng ... suspended its 100% inspection of the bottom wall thickness of the rear right halfshaft outer race production line due to labor shortages caused by the Chinese New Year. This allowed non-compliant parts to pass through into finished rear right halfshaft assemblies.... 4,608 parts were produced as part of the two suspect lots. Shipping records show a total of 504 halfshafts from the suspect lots were delivered to Ford CSAP and the rest were contained at Neapco’s Facilities. On August 15th, 2022, Tier 1 Supplier Neapco informed Ford Motor Company all rear right halfshafts at its Saltillo facility had been sorted, finding a total of 7 non-compliant parts,... On August 19, 2022, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action."

Interesting story. At any rate, the Cuautitlan Assembly plant shutdown in August was scheduled many weeks before and announced by Ford. In all likelihood, unrelated to this recall. It will be interesting to see how the bad parts may have made it into July-built MMEs that are apparently enroute to dealers. (~3400 MME were scheduled for assembly in last two weeks of July but ~500 of the bad parts were delivered to the plant.) There does not appear to be any "stop sale" associated with this recall, so it does seem that dealers are expected to identify and fix the problem parts in advance of the "end user".

Thanks. I'd not realized the shutdown was planned so far in advance. I've edited the OP.

Yeah, nearly all the plants have summer shutdown. It's usually the dividing line between Job 1 and Job 2 vehicles, but not guaranteed. It's a time to do minor retooling, training, or IT tasks (which is where I come in most of the time).

I was worried reading this since my car was built in August, but looks like a couple weeks after the impacted units were identified and seemingly corrected already. I appreciate you posting it as I haven't seen this recall before now.

So my MME Premium Ext range was built (allegedly) the week of July 18/25. It was supposed to be delivered mid-August. It has now been delayed until mid-September. When I talked to the dealer, he said the car was in Jacksonville, FL (an hour from me) but that it had a "hold" on it; there was some sort of problem, he didn't know what, and that repairs were being made. SO, after checking the NHTSA website, my car is definitely one of the affected units. Better now than after I take delivery! (ordered in October, 2021).

Mine just unloaded today from train 60 miles away and waiting for a truck delivery to Dealer is affected based on nhsta website. Not sure what and when it will be fixed to be released for sale. Recall says dealer might offer a rental but not sure if possible without taking delivery of vehicle

With timing, I think most of these will be inspected and fixed by dealers before customers take delivery. Unfortunately this might prolong the delivery process by several weeks until parts are obtained and the vehicle fixed. Dealer bulletin attached.

Now I'm just wondering how many manufacturing problems occur due to Chinese New Year lol

Looks like Ford will let you know if the MME unit destined to be yours is subject to this recall 9/19. However, if you wish to investigate NOW... a) If you have the good fortune to already have the vehicle, look at the door pillar label for the build date. b) if your unit is built but not delivered: look at batch number on your window sticker to see if it was built in the last two weeks of July. Even then, not all MMEs built in those two weeks have a bad right rear halfshaft.

Mine was built on 7/29. I just punched the VIN into the NHTSA website and it says 0 recalls. Maybe mines okay?

Looks like I’m involved according to NHTSA. Build week was 7/25. Interesting when I look on Ford’s website it’s showing no recalls for my VIN. Going to reach out to my dealer tomorrow

Has anyone actually seen recall posted by going to NHTSA and looking up their VIN?
