My MME purchase is at MSRP only (no ADM) and I expected to take the full $7500 tax credit for '23 MME delivering in Jan 2023.

With this bad news, I may not buy my incoming '23 MME even with the $6K PCO.

Ford better change my window sticker or credit $7500 against the contract.

Or dealers will see a large influx of customer abandoned MME...
My point was some and perhaps many will walk away from their orders. Only time will tell if others, who do not care about either the $7,500 or $3,750 tax credit, step in and make the purchase. And another major unfortunate issue is many may not realize their order no longer qualifies. Ford always stated that the vehicle may qualify. Of course Ford may have to change their web site because it would be wrong to state it may qualify if it no longer does. I would also assume there will be some form of price/financing incentives if sales drop off too much. Only time will tell on sales but no matter what this is bad news for those who have already ordered a 23MY and factored in the tax credit.

For those saying Ford will work to fix this, might Ford be the one pushing the car designation?

The only true car Ford sells in the USA is the ICE Mustang - perhaps the ICE Mustang being the only non-SUV/truck sold causes problems with the CAFE rules because it is too inefficient so they want the Mach-E to count as a car to balance it out?

If ford doesn't get the IRS to reclassify it, they certainly will have to pass it through a lease using section 45 to save themselves

The IRS spits truth here. The only reason anyone would call the Mach-E an SUV is because Americans have all lost their god damn minds and most will not purchase a vehicle that isn't an SUV. Even when most of those SUV purchases are just boring tall cars anyway. The Mach E is a fun to drive family station wagon, and that should be considered a good thing.

Argue that the MSRP limit shouldn't be different between vehicle type, but you can't argue what is clearly a car should be an SUV.
The problem isn't Americans' preference for taller/larger vehicle, the problem is lawmaker's dumb policies. An arbitrary MSRP cutoff and an arbitrary vehicle type classification for such a huge tax credit is an irresponsible way to govern. ESPECIALLY making it all-or-nothing across an arbitrary price point. These types of things should always be done on a sliding scale (like say, a $200 reduction in the credit for every $1000 in MSRP over $50k, regardless of vehicle type). That way people only lose a little of the credit when they're barely over the threshold.

Now this is a reasonable argument to have! Not sure I have anything to back this up, but I feel like a hatchback should be a small car, preferably with 2 doors, that can cary an unexpectedly large amount in the hatch with the seats down. I can fit my family of 5 with 2 car seats, plus all the crap that we need (probably need is the wrong word here) and drive 600 miles for a vacation in our Mach E. That sounds more like a family station wagon to me.
I looked up Mach E vs Kia Soul and the Kia Soul had slightly more cargo space with the seats down and the Mach E had just barely more total interior volume. Also, Mach E is smaller than the cut-off for, I think it was, "small station wagon."

When you get to the SUV, van, and truck ratings, it doesn't talk about interior room whatsoever and instead shifts to weight. That's pretty odd, because there's no minimum cutoff for SUVs, it was either like small SUV <6k lbs, or large SUV >6k lbs.

Just imagine if you would have ordered an option that cost around $100. That would in effect cost you $7,500. CRAZY!!
Kinda like if you make $150,000 in income versus $150,001 next year.

Of course we can. It’s a forum. :p

Now, whether we should, and whether the comprehensive list, whenever that comes out, uniformly assigns similar vehicles to the same category is another story altogether.
If I run my VIN in the NHTSA VIN Decoder, body type comes back as an SUV.

You're in. Send me some beer!
Ha, thanks for that - makes me feel a lot better than earlier.

I appreciate you looking at the price before D&D, but I will need to ask a tax pro if I can use the price before D&D.

Yes, if it's true, I owe you a case of beer!

Thanks also to @RedOctobrrr @DBPNW @DennisD @heisnuts
