Ford Mustang Mach-E First Tesla Supercharger location with "Magic Dock" CCS compatibility in the US potentially revealed 1674391583846
Tesla accidentally reveals Magic Dock, hints first Supercharger with CCS compatibility will be in Hawthorne

Tesla has already opened up their Supercharger network to owners of other electric vehicles (EVs) in more than one dozen countries in Europe, and is expected to do the same in the US this year. In what looks like a blunder, Tesla appears to have accidentally revealed one of the first Superchargers with CCS compatibility will be in Hawthorne, California, and shown the Magic Dock for the very first time.

When Tesla launched the non-Tesla Supercharger Pilot program, the company added a filter to its ā€˜Find Usā€™ map in Europe to display Superchargers open to non-Tesla vehicles. On Friday night that same filter was added for the US map. Using the filter revealed just one Supercharger, and that was the one in Hawthorne, just around the corner from the companyā€™s Design Studio. (h/t: @haydensawyer14)

Our friends at Teslascope were nearby and able to check it out soon after it was discovered, but unfortunately there was no sign of the Magic Dock, a CCS adapter device which Drive Tesla reported exclusively about last year. However a closer look within the mobile app revealed Tesla could be preparing to retrofit and add the Magic Dock very soon.

Along with adding the filter to the map on their website, Tesla also added Hawthorne as an option under the ā€˜Charge your Non-Teslaā€™ menu in the mobile app. Going through the process to the point where you select the stall, Tesla shared an image the Magic Dock for the first time, as seen in the image below saved and shared by Branden Flasch. (@brandenflasch). The image is a little dark in the app but we edited it to make the Magic Dock more visible, and it matches the design that was shared with us last year.

You can read more about the Magic Dock and how it works here. Both the filter and this image have now been removed from the website and mobile app.

Based on these two accidental reveals, we believe Tesla will open up their Supercharger network to other EVs in the US very soon. It is likely that the first station to be retrofitted with the Magic Dock will be this one in Hawthorne as it is just steps away from Teslaā€™s Design Studio.

From what we have been told, and from what we can see in the image above, the process to retrofit an existing Supercharger and add the Magic Dock is relatively simple, so the process to perform this in Hawthorne could take less than one day, depending if Tesla decides to add it to only some or all 20 stalls at this location.

If you are near the Hawthorne Supercharger definitely keep an eye out over the next few weeks for any work being done at the station, as it will probably be crews adding the Magic Dock. If you spot anything let us know at [email protected] or tag us on Twitter (@driveteslaca).

Looks useless to us unless that cable gets longer
Depends how they posting the supercharger in relation to the parking spot. The cables on EAs statins arenā€™t any long and they reach just fine. We would just park nose in.

Actually think SC cables are shorter than EA, seems like they will be retrofitting existing SC, so we know what the placement is gonna be like

Tesla Destination L2 cables are pretty short and I don't have trouble using them (with a TeslaTap).

Meh, there are only two Supercharger stations within a 40 mile radius and neither are along routes I regularly travel. Tesla needs to add more actual station around here before worrying about cross compatibility.

Actually, having CCS chargers at Ford and GM dealers will be far more useful and convenient for me. Still more charging of any kind, anywhere is a good thing. I keep forgetting it's not all about me. šŸ˜‰

The sooner we get rid of proprietary networks the better for everyone and EV adoption in general

They are not retrofitting, they are entirely new cabinets. Itā€™s possible they will have longer cables or different positioning, we donā€™t know yet.

Sounds like they have them well positioned then. You donā€™t need them where you live or travel regularly, you need them in between destinations you will drive long distances to.

I don't see why Tesla would open up SC without heavy government subsidies. It's their competitive advantage and nobody helped them build it, and it's a major marketing feature. They almost bankrupted to execute the vertically integrated model that today every manufacturer would kill to have.
Why open this up, if not for truck loads of money?

They are opening it up because the government is giving them a ā€œtruck load of moneyā€ to do so.

Speculation without proof or sources. Iā€™m not saying Iā€™m for sure right either. Weā€™ll see when they start rolling out.

Itā€™s just a box that attaches to the pedestal probably a mechanism that attaches it when you need it and if you donā€™t return it you get charged for it or something like that

It isnā€™t that though. The ā€œmagic dockā€ is a CCS adapter that docks in to the supercharger frame and the Tesla connector docks in to that. When you pull up with a Tesla, just the Tesla connector is unlocked, when you pull up with any other EV the CCS connector is unlocked and the Tesla connector remains locked to the adapter. Itā€™s actually a very elegant solution to keep the adapter from being taken. All that mechanics is not something that is just going to attach to existing superchargers. There will need to be retrofitting.

Thatā€™s literally what I just said. Iā€™m so confused.
