Toyota didn't have CarPlay in 2018?? what? that's wild
On top of that they didn't have Android auto until 2021 in most models.

My wife still has an Android and I still think this is dumb.

can’t ignore iPhone users.
They are also going to abandon support for Android Auto because they only want their apps running in the car. ??

that's a bit misleading. there are only two competing os on phones. apple as a single company looks larger because they are only ones who sell their phones. the others might al be listed separate but all sell android so really its more or less 50/50 iOS/ Android. and when you look at it on a world wide scale which car makers sell world wide apple is only roughly 15% of the market android more then dominates. Im in no way defending the decision but by the numbers if you do world wide business then car play is actually small potatoes. and there are other factors perhaps apple is making their license to expensive in these cost cutting times. Idont know who does.
Ok, “one of the major market players”.

However, I’d point out that 15% market share of the automotive market isn’t “small potatoes” and that Apple skews towards higher end consumers (presumably more willing to buy higher-end premium products). Finally, I thought I saw that GM will be ditching support for Android as well?

I think people confuse the OS for the car called Android, and the OS in your phone called Android. The migration to Android Auto will run the apps in the car, not your phone.

That would be Android Automotive the car OS, not Android Auto the screen and app mirroring system. ??

I believe the new car infotainment OS is called “Google Built-in” as reported by @scoopman ??

I think most auto manufacturers want to move to fully integrated infotainment systems and ditch phone mirroring. There are 2 reasons: UX and also, haha, yes more control over what they can sell you.

The UX argument actually makes sense. A fully integrated infotainment dashboard integrates the cars data with maps. The example provided is that the car will know which chargers are within range and will preselect for them. Phone mirroring cannot do this because the car doesn't share data with the phone. One could argue it should, but I can see multiple reasons why they wouldn't, and not all of them are cynical product grabs.

Speaking of cynical product grabs you can see why ford's eyes might light up at the thought of selling apps to drivers. Or selling our data to 3rd parties. Sorry, I meant "collecting data to enhance our experience".

Given the momentum with right to repair laws, however, I'm not sure this will work out quite the way they're expecting. Honestly we need better regs in this space before the autos start charging us to do anything beyond applying the gas and brakes.
You obviously haven't used an iPhone and CarPlay recently because the car and the phone share battery status with each other, and if I set a route, and Maps things I will get below 20% on that route, it will automatically route me to a charger along the way. And given that navigation prompts show up on the IC, clearly there's a bit more than just phone mirroring to the Infotainment screen going on.

Yes there's clearly 1-way data sharing going on - as evidenced by the navigation indicators showing up on the dash. But I'm curious about whether the phone has access to the car data. It doesn't happen on Android so maybe this is an iphone only thing? The MME SOC doesn't appear on my Google maps nav and I never see a prompt from maps to route me to a charger.

Well, given that my iPhone has the capability of getting battery status from the car, clearly there is two-way communication going on.

Plus the apple map soc prediction for arrival is considerably more accurate than the native nav. Two way communication plus better calculations.

And pay for another data plan so those apps can work? Or piggyback off my phone's data? No thanks, the little rectangle in my pocket allready does all that on it's own and it also delivers a consitant experience whether it is connected to a car, tv, bluetooth speaker. No need for yet another app ecosystem to further muddy the waters.
You can't watch youtube videos with carplay, with ford's ui and Tesla's you can. This is the limitation of carplay. It doesn't offer full software experience which people value

So they're going to adopt Android Automotive OS, which supports Carplay today (see Polestar 2). But they're going to forbid Carplay just so they can more easily charge a subscription and/or sell my personal data? No thanks.

Maybe it's a "freemium" model where they give you the car for free :)

It isn't meant to allow you to watch YouTube videos. It's not a limitation due to a software bug.

Apple Maps running on IOS 16.2. This capability has been in IOS since 15.4 and a Ford Power update last year:
