Recommendations for L-2 EVSE

Good morning all....I've had my '21 Select since Feb. 12, 2021and charge at home on a 120 line.....has been fine for me BUT I'm getting a new '23 in a month or two and would like to get a L-2 EVSE......

My needs are very, very simple.....when I need a charge, I plug in, that's all I need, no need for information, just not into all that.....what are some recommendations from those of you that have been using L-2's......unit will be porch protected (very old house), but sometimes will get some slight rain.......20+ cord length.....I basically only want/need the increased speed of charging, nothing else.....like using a free "volta" at the zoo, plug-in when I get there, when I am ready to go un plug....

Your recommendations will be greatly appreciated......I have done a fairly complete google search, reading reviews, but trust forum members over google reviews....thank you in advance

I have gone thru 3 charger makes since Feb 21' when we got our Select. We are using an Emporia charger at 40 amps. We could hard wire it for the full 48amps but like the ability to plug in the mobile charge if needed.

Personally, I am a fan of the Grizzl-E. It meets your needs. Simple robust system.

I have 2 units,

one in Florida an. Autel plug in 40 amp. Works well and no issues. The app is so so but I don’t use the app much.

the other one is a Juicebox, 40 amp plug in. The first juicebox I had , the plug was way too hot to the touch. I called them and they sent a replacement. Much better.
the old app for juicebox was very good but the new one is not so good but the unit works well.

Originally had the ChargePoint Home Flex. I wired it direct and used it for a year and a half. Worked very well but I only like charging during solar production and I got tired of changing the charging amperage based on the solar so purchased the Emporia. Now I just plug it in and it constantly varies the charging amperage up to 48 based on the solar output. Couldn’t be happier.

I'll second the GRIZZL-E recommendation. No extra features, great price, good materials and craftsmanship, and a robust charging cord.

Recommend a Splitvolt charger if you’re looking for plug in basics. You can choose the amperage and plug type when you purchase, and they have extension options as well. Easy, no frills, and hundreds $ less than most others.

I agree with your approach to use a simple charger that has no high-level functions or network connection. At work, the car and the charging system sometimes disagree on what to do; everything still works, but I sometimes get interrupted with pointless notifications.

++ on the Grizzl-E; mine's been in service for two years with no issues.

My experience with the Grizzl-E was ok.

However, we keep our cars at 90%, with the Fordpass I have found you can't push the car to 100% unless it is actively charging, it tells me to use in car if it is connected but idle at 90% (road trip to Disney in the morning). I can go into the Emporia app as I have the car set up in there and restart the charging and push it to 100%. Why the the FordPass can not do this but Emporia app can (thru the car) is a mystery.

Also, the Emporia app gives you a "to the penny" charging cost for every session, pretty nice.

Those appear to be solid-state portable EVSEs. Might as well just use the Ford mobile one at that point.

Chargepoint homeflex hardwired. Has good form and function, never had an issue. App is good too.

I’ve had great luck with the Tesla J1772 Wall Connector, instructions were easy to follow, and I really like the way that they wire the terminals to the mounting bracket, makes it easy to replace if there are ever any problems.

I know the Grizzl-E chargers are popular, but there have been some issues in the past with overheating/fires due to improper terminal connections inside.

Hey. I have a grizzl-e and despite the ... unfortunate... name, it does exactly what it says on the tin. Long beefy cable, decent internal electronics, sturdy box. Mine is hard wired.

That being said, I have some remorse. Charging here between midnight and 3pm (through the morning) is half the price as the rest of the time, so it's really important to get the timing right. I'd really like to see when my car charged how much... and Ford's app gives me bubkis.

I do have a charging location set. I am pretty sure I am charging at the right time. And I got a notification when I plugged in this evening that "Your car will charge outside charging times", but for no reason. I don't think it did. But I really have no way to know, because Ford says "oh yeah I charged for 13 hours" and "I charged for 5 hours" in another part of the app. RIght now it says it's "charging" (eg plugged in, which is correct) in one part of the app, and "completed charging" (because it's pulling no power because it's at its limit) in another part of the app.

The right answer is a graph. Or an hour-by-hour bar chart. Anything. Instead I get nothing.

I'm all about the charger is just a safety element between one circuit and another and I don't want something fancy that will lock me out or anything... but with Ford's charging system so lame, I'm almost regretting it.

That said, ALMOST! The "charger" should be simple and the Grizzle fits the bill and I'm happy with that part. Just very disappointed with Ford.

Entirely not true that they are not UL listed. Selling non-UL listed appliances is a serious crime, as would stating UL listing when it is not.
