It actually adjusts based on your speed. Mine wasn't annoyingly loud until i was coming from a 30mph to a stop. Then I started humming along with the thing. The backup uses both speakers as far as I could tell and is only one volume. Drive next to a block wall with the window down. You should hear it. If it's actually not working you'd get a code.

In my garage with the windows down in the car, simply shifting to drive from park causes a loud alert sound to initiate. It's not that loud, but it is amplified in a small one or two car garage.

With that said, I disabled the alert sound entirely and don't have to worry about it anymore...

Thank you actually I do every day pass between a patio home 8' set back and a Condo with 3' set back for 40+' to the sidewalk. Lots of foot traffic as the Starbucks is across the street. Which is why it's important to get it right. Kids with and without adults are on the move.

Are modern ICE cars really louder?

Depends on the ICE car. My GT350 was much much louder - especially with the exhaust in "sport" mode.

Consider how many ICE drivers are TRUCK's. which most are not used for trucking but well who knows. LOUD. Plus consider the Mustang GT's with "special exhausts" again who knows but you sure know there around.
