Are the MMEs equipped with a TP Link Wifi client device ?

When I connected my MME to my home router, it shows up as "SYNC TP Link RE305".

Does it do 5Ghz or still stuck at 2.4Ghz tech ??

Sounds strange finding a consumer WiFi embedded in our high tech Mach Es...

The first few characters of the mac address will indicate the manufacturer of the wifi chipset, and maybe your router is picking that up. It does not mean you have a consumer wifi embedded in your car. But, Ford would have had to buy the WiFi chip from somewhere, so I guess it could have been TP Link. My impression is that TP Link makes decent stuff, so I don' t think this is any cause for concern.

TP-Link stuff is pretty great. My home mesh is a terrific Deco AX4300 system. IoT stuff is not really "stuck" at 2.4 Ghz. The lower frequency is more stable and has better surface penetration which is why most device makers use it.

I was going to check my Deco app to see if my car shows up as TP-Link but then I remembered I am at work and so is my car (duh) ?

Ubiquity is not all that great at correctly identifying network devices. I would say less than half of my devices are identified correctly.

Edited to add:
I have two SYNC devices that periodically connect, two different MAC addresses. One has no manufacturer listed and the other says Flextronics.

your home system is guessing based on MAC address and possibly some other variables. while they do a pretty good job it's still guessing.

the mach-e wifi hotspot (separate from the internal system) does have 5GHz capability it doesn't appear the car's internal system is using 5GHz for connecting to the internet - at least i haven't seen it do so on mine yet.

same here. my guess is it's just a newly assigned Flextronics range that hasn't shown up in the OUI databases yet. i haven't had time to dig in and figure out what each is doing yet.

So nice to have such knowledgeable & techy folks here....

At home, the MME connects to my home Ubiquiti router; while at work connects to a highly secured Cisco/Meraki wireless, and on the road I use a Verizon mobile hotspot with the lowest security.

Does it use WPA3? I'm working on a project to fit in my PB F150 (among other things, more of an 'easily mobile' GPU array) that will decrypt most WPA2 networks via a mobile GPU cluster. 7kW worth of power is more than enough power for modern GPUs to brute force ~90% of passwords in a few seconds.

I recently dumped Comcast for Fidium Fiber. Turns out I never reconnected my car to my home network (created a new SSID and password when I changed ISPs). I fixed that this morning on my way out but forgot to check how the car appears on the network.

If my head weren't attached......

Funny - you are exactly the ones that we see at work all the time on our network trying to brute force your way in. Most of the attacks come from: China, Russian territories, South America, and southeast Asia......

As a network admin, we have to use aliases instead of our names in the past when we access our local admin accounts and WAN storage.....

And another reason our network access to secured data requires 2FA/MFA......

Guess that's why our ISP insurance is also gotten expensive...

What advantage is there to having the car connected to the home wifi?

It seems like OTA prefer if not require a good LTE signal for the car.

WiFi connection is optional will often lead to faster updates as the update package will be downloaded via WiFi.

However installation of the downloaded file is only done thru AT&T cellular which is secured and used to avoid any tampering or alteration of the downloaded file - most likely a checksum confirmation.

I just got my very first update a week after taking delivery and it was connected to my home WiFi, work WiFi, and mobile hotspot.....
