MyQ Possibly Introducing Subscription Service Model for Garage Door Opening via CarPlay?

Honestly, I find HomeLink to be a better solution than using MyQ through CarPlay. This will be MyQ using their own CarPlay app, and not HomeKit. It will not appear on the dashboard view. (Or widget view that some people around here call it.) To me this means it will take extra taps, to do the same thing as a single button press above your head.

Side note: If you are using HomeKit, there are ways to get MyQ into it via HomeBridge. It will essentially do the same thing but could still be subscription based if they "wall garden" the API. Time will tell though on what they do.

This whole announcement just seemed like it was a PR move for attention. It's not just those vehicles that it will work for at the end of the day. You just need CarPlay and the correct garage hardware. Was really a silly story...

I use an app called LIVEKey that uses a geofence with MYQ garage link. when i arrive near my home the garage door opens. It’s kind of hit or miss but does work. when it doesnt open the Homelink works just fine.

MyQ can make their app a Car Play app, that way it'd show up on our Mach E screens when our Iphones are connected to the Mach E. But they won't do that because of their need for a subscription service.

I've had a Tailwind garage door for several years and have been very happy with it. Geofencing and no subscription. I also really like that it will automatically choose the door if I've forgotten to close it once again...
Another vote for tailwind. We bought in a couple months ago and it’s been pretty nice

There was a reddit post where people mentioned that myQ was shutting down 3rd party API access.

A couple days after I saw that post my homebridge logs filled up with this:
Screenshot 2023-10-16 at 2.10.18 PM.png

I have not changed my myQ password and can still use the myQ app.

The same symptoms from the reddit thread. That person called myQ and says they were told that 3rd party access is being shut off.
Seems like you got it fixed, but I ran into this a couple days ago as well, same errors, though mine said to try again in 60-90 minutes. So I updated the myq plugin, disabled it for a couple hours, then turned it back on. Has been working well ever since.

I suspect they're trying to copy tesla's approach here. They don't have a homelink garage door opener so you're forced to use the MyQ service instead. The car will use geofencing and automatically open/close the door for you as you are coming and going. (It does give you a notification at the very least so you know it's happening).

But in order for all that to work you need to pay that stupid MyQ subscription.

Alternatively I'm just going to drop this here. Smart control of your garage from any platform, without the need for MyQ BS

And to be clear, because I know somebody will bring this up. The MyQ app has been free for years, and they've not announced any plans to change that. The subscription comes into play when you connect your MyQ account to another supported service (in this case tesla or honda)
That’s odd. I have 2 Chamberlain MyQ door openers and both work with homelink.

That’s odd, I have a pair of 2 year old Chamberlain wall mount door openers that are MyQ native and they work with Homelink on my MME and Ram.

Why would anyone do this instead of just buying a $20 garage door opener or using the integrated buttons in the visor?

Seems like an expensive solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

We buy so many things because we want them and in no way need them.

Here’s a little different twist. I was using a MyQ hub (old black one) with a very old Chamberlin opener and it worked fine. Then the opener died. I replaced it with a Genie. At the time of installation, the Genie Connect app was not compatible with Amazon Key, so I had to buy the newer MyQ (white one) and gerryrig the set up but it worked eventually for Key. Then like a month later, an email from Genie, boom, we now support Amazon Key! So I set that up in the Amazon app and it works no problem. The MyQ is just sitting there now. I also had set up the LiveKey/HomeKit/shortcuts solution to “hey siri, open my garage door.” It worked fairly well for a couple of months and then just suddenly stopped and haven’t been able to get it to work since. So I’m back to using the HomeLink button on the visor. Does anyone know of an automation or integration to use Siri to open and close the garage door with a new model Genie opener with Aladdin Connect?

Tailwind looks interesting, but you have to add hardware to your car, which is idiotic. I have devices that are authenticated to HomeKit (Apple Watch and iPhone) with me. I shouldn’t have to add an accessory to my car just to open the garage ?

  1. Because it allows me to control my garage door from anywhere, via my phone or watch
  2. It provides visibility to the status of my garage door (did I forget to close it?)
  3. If I name it “pod bay door”, then I can say “hey siri, open the pod bay door” ???

No, you don't need to add hardware to use Tailwind. It connects to your car's Bluetooth. Tailwind includes a hardware dongle for customers who don't have Bluetooth on their car. Your MME has Bluetooth :)
