On three occasions recently, my 2021 MACH-E has come to a jarring stop while backing up. Any ideas?

Mine does this as well, on occasion, when I back down the driveway onto the street. I have an inclined driveway. In my case, it's a part of the driver's electronic sensor assistance package.

Definitely reverse brake assist. I have the same issue on occasion as I slowly back out of my garage or driveway. What is odd is that I am SLOWLY backing out and at no point do I get a proximity warning. Just an abrupt sudden hard brake which on two occasions has pissed my wife off as she is thinking that I am trying to eff with her while she take a drink or is putting on makeup.

On two of those occasions, there was nothing behind me. On the third, there was an object behind me but it was some distance. I got no warning and a hard stop. Can I turn it off?

Yes, there was something behind you, that's why it did it. It could have been the tilt of the road or driveway.

Yes, you can turn it off. It's in the settings, and the feature is described in the manual.

get this when I get to the bottom of my steep driveway if I'm going too fast.

Now you get the nice big Orange warning that it's turned off every time you back up. Sadly I turned mine back on because of that warning.

I occasionally get this backing out of my somwewhat steep driveway where the driveway meets the road. Maybe happens 3-5% of the time. Seems more likely if there is debris (leaves, ice chunks) on the road.
I thought about turning it off, but I figured it's worth the hassle if it ever keeps me out of a fender-bender in a parking lot.

Only had it go off once when there was an abrupt grade increase at the end of a driveway. Leaves and bushes can also set it off if you get too close. Basically make a clear flat path and it shouldn’t go off unless you have shadows on the pavement.

Mine started doing this just as I put up my Christmas lights around the garage door. Happened twice in three days late at night. Never did this before and this is my first holiday season with my ME.

Car is anti-Christmas. Says so in the manual.

I have had it happen more than once when I back out of my shaded garage into bright sunlight. My driveway is level and there are no nearby objects. Just a very distinct shadow cast by the garage roof.

I'm not a fan of how it slams on the brakes at low speed. I'll leave it on though, just in case.
