The speed of government. Except when they want to impose mandates on us and manipulate the market, of course.

Been saying all along that this EV transition will take much longer that some expect/wanted. And will only be partial, not absolute.
More like a lot of state governments aren't the most efficient especially when it comes to soliciting bids.

Yup.

In the same time, Tesla has built another 1000-ish sites in North America - from 1300 to 2300 (Dec 2023).

Point taken but its not a apples to apples comparison bc states are tasked with soliciting the bids. And if you every worked for a state government agency (I have), some of them aren't the most efficient when it comes to competitive bidding and construction processes. You live in the STate of FL as I do, you should know this very well.

This is proceeding exactly as I expected.

Signed into law on 11/15/21.

On 2/10/22, they released the NEVI Formula Program to show states what they could get in 2022 - 2026. That's remarkable that it got done that fast.

States then had to submit plans for the initial funding by 8/1/22.

Feds approved every plan by 9/27/22.

Then, the states have to start following their plans. Some moved faster than others. Ohio is ahead because they were already working on it. Yet they didn't award a dime until 7/13/23. Hawaii beat them by 2 days.

Slow? This is rocket ship speed for government.

After reading this - makes me laugh !

"Even some states with high rates of EV adoption, like California and Washington, have yet to award any of their funds."

And CA is supposed to be 100% EV new car sales by 2035 !

That's not going to fly...

I recently reached out to the office in WA that is doing the NEVI awards and was told that they’re still some months out from any further announcements. It’s silly.

The only good news is that WA has a state-level program with similar intentions as NEVI (funded by an annual $75 fee imposed on all hybrids and EVs) that announced its awards in October.

Not saying you're wrong, but I was on a call with in August of this year with FL DOT's EV lead, stakeholders including charge point operators, and FL DOT presented their plan that they submitted to the Feds. It was very well done, but the FL DOT EV lead kind of hinted that it'll take sometime before they can get started with the bidding process. If you know anything about construction projects lead by the state of FL, then you know it takes a long time for projects to start. I've lived here my whole life and that's always been the case.
When this goes live, I will believe FL is serious about NEVI

https://www.fdot.gov/emergingtechnologies/home/evprogram/rfa

I read Tesla's FL NEVI comments and they mentioned it typically takes about a 12-16 months to get a SC location fully built from planning to opening. The permitting being the longest part of the process. So when funds are allocated in FL, it will be 12 months before chargers will open and the bidding hasn't even started because the form isn't even ready.

The earliest I expect a NEVI funded charger in FL to open is maybe mid 2025. Assuming NEVI funds aren't applied to "already permitted and in progress" DC charging locations.

I’m rather shocked about Florida. I would have thought that the state government animosity toward the current administration would have been a reason for nothing to happen.

Not to mention the states then had to submit an updated plan for year two while also soliciting/awarding bids most likely with minimum staffing levels. I believe states that have awarded bids for construction are right on track.

Next year we should have 10 DCFC chargers in Fairbanks for the 30 registered EV’s! Obviously there should be more by then but it does astound me that the states with the most need are behind the power curve!
Off the wall topic. How do EV fair in winter months? Just curious is all

Mine does fine and I know there are many users in Canada as well. I believe there are about 1,000 total registered EV’s in Alaska. Personally I chose to switch to my ICE rid when temps go below -20F but I have been out to -30F. I also have a heated garage but would not go without one for an iCE rig either as I am a whimp! No issues with my Mach in 20 months and it stays comfortable enough to drive. I do not do long highway drives so I do not know how comfortable it would be driving long distances at highway speeds at -20F. My GT also has a hard top.

I visited the first site in Ohio that opened and was impressed with the time from grant approval, permitting, ground breaking, to completion. In terms of how fast governmental funding works and the fact that this is impacted by federal and state governments meeting various program requirements I'm quite impressed. Do I wish they would have been required to build more than 4 chargers at each location in Ohio, yes, but at the conclussion of this project there will be a couple hundred more DC fast chargers in Ohio alone than there were originally. Will it keep pace with demand (especially for us non NACS folks), probably not, but it's moving in the right direction.

I guess I'm just a glass half full kind of person, but in terms of efficient use of government money what were everyone's realistic expectations? This money is being spent domestically, helping build infrastructure that didn't exist almost a decade ago.

I do wish they would have granted a sole source award to Tesla to deploy v4 chargers throughout our state so we would have ended up with more than 4 stations at a location, and ones that are much more dependable than those sourced through EVGO, EA, or the remaining DCFC providers.

Who is going to be first to announce a NEVI funded charger with a NACS port or Magic Dock like device? Remember the market has moved from CCS to NACS ports. Will the new 2025 EV come with an adaptor or come with one that works on all these different brand of CCS charging stations? We have reliability issues today with ccs charging stations. Will it get worse?

No stations can exclude CCS capability and get NEVI funds as of now.

Reliability has nothing to do with the port.
