This is hilarious. Apparently if you get a little scratch on the bottom of your ev, you have to replace the whole battery. And it is not covered by warranty. Is it Hyundai, or Canada or is it a common problem for evs?

Has happened to a few Mach-E owners on here too. The dealers aren’t trained well enough to evaluate battery damage, so they just claim the whole battery needs to be replaced when they see minor damage. The insurance companies don’t know how to respond and believe the opinion of the dealer, so they want to total the vehicle.

What should happen is an actual battery expert comes out to inspect the damage and makes a determination. This is extremely worthwhile because the dealers get things wrong in a lot of cases, and the inspection can save as much as $60,000 in unnecessary repairs. The insurance companies haven’t figured this out yet because EVs are still new to them.

Why is the battery 60K? The battery prices are supposed to go down, not skyrocket.

The battery is not 60k. Replacing the battery is 60 k.
Removal, install.

Manufacturers have some apparently odd blanket rules because they, and seemingly their dealers do not know and aren’t trusted to distinguish between just “damage” and proper “damage”??‍♂

This has always been the case. For instance, makers say a wheel impact should require a new steering rack but nobody ever renewed a steering rack when they struck a kerb with a wheel.

It needs somebody to apply some expertise and a sense of proportion.

As far as the battery’s concerned, I am that man for my vehicle having trained as a Level 4 EV Technician! Nobody will dictate Stangy’s getting written off for a scratched or even damaged battery cradle unless I think there’s a risk to battery.

Stangy’s goin’ nowhere!

Love it too much?

after a few of these, didn't Tesla slap a Titanium skid plate under their cars?

If you are right then it would be even more ridiculous. But according to the video labor and parts are about 1500, the battery is 56k

Price with dealer markup probably.
Isn't that ridiculous to bring the price of the part to the point that even a little scratch totals the car?
The insurance price will go through the roof pretty soon, which will kill EVs completely

Not that it helps much, the price is in Canadian Dollars so the conversion to US Dollars would mean it's less than 60,000.

I would hope that the purpose of the skid plate is to protect the battery from damage and if it doesn't what's the point in having it? See

At 1.04 the presenters say the battery assembly is upside down so we're seeing the bottom which has got the skid protector. Also 3.30 onwards "The SMC protector provides an air gap between the channels" etc. So, there is actually an air gap by design. I suppose it would be too much work for the dealer to detach the protector to actually LOOK if there is any damage to the battery casing. Also if there were any damage only the cell affected would need replacing?

Too many assumptions by the dealer and not enough fault finding. Just throw parts at it and unfortunately the battery is the most expensive part.

It would also appear from the original video that the dealer did not consult with Hyundai HQ about the way forward.

Will be interesting if there's any follow up to the first video.

91kW X 140 = $12,700. (granted this doesn't take into account all the other stuff like the housing, bus bars etc. It's classiclly JUST the cell.)
R&R lets say, reasonable would be $2500. So the dealer adds another 0 $25k?
Seems legit.

OMFG
Now I have some doubts about the future of ev's
Don’t believe random people on the internet. Even if the Mach E battery is $36k, that speaks nothing any the future of EVs but more so the future of Ford. If it’s true and people find out a Tesla battery pack costs $16k installed and Ford is $36k, Ford will die very quickly.
