Yes, but the 500A is apparently not working out so well:
just with the EV9, right? It’s having trouble charging on both European and US superchargers. Hummer EV and Rivians seem to charge just fine on it.

I think he's mentioned a few models having issues with the MDs. Not really unexpected though. We've been saying for years that the talk about Tesla SCs being so "perfect" is in part a product of being limited to use by their own vehicles. And that when they did eventually open up to other manufacturers' vehicles, they'd start seeing some of the same failures as EA and the others. It's just much harder to interface with a variety of manufacturers' vehicle than your own little universe.

Seems like Tesla might be in better position to make faster adjustments necessary to fix those incompatibility quirks though.

They will in a few months when the adapters come out and Tesla flips the switch.

MagicDocks are a separate thing. That's just Tesla putting them in a handful of random stations around the country. They're not tied to competitor manufacturing locations at all. Hard to ascertain their pattern, honestly. At one point it was thought they were picking underutilized SC stations because they didn't want to overload already crowded stations.

At this point it's looking more like Tesla is using MDs as testing grounds for use of the adapters (charger and vehicle software compatibilities). Could be why they're scattered around the country, to catch different vehicle trends. Although by far their biggest install base is in NY state, perhaps because they're manufacturered in Buffalo and it's simply closer for their tech teams to test? Just speculation.

The Tesla Superchargers are by no means perfect, in fact, the last test I did with my Hummer I got only 34kw output on one station. Sound familiar? Moved to a second charger and it started at 178kw and then up to 187kw.

The Kias and Hyundais are using the inverters to pump up the 400V to 800V, so not surprised by their issues. The Hummer switches between parallel and series with the pack halves to handle both charger types. Taycan and Lucid can only get 50kw because of the built-in DC-DC converters they use for 400V chargers.

I think the scattered Magic Dock theory as a test bed before wider rollout has merit. I’m just surprised, if not disappointed, that we’re not seeing MD deployed faster.

The 800v thing is so interesting to me! I know the EGMP cars initially had problems at Superchargers in North America that limited their charging to 40-50kW but something changed in the last few months where they’re all getting 97kW now.

My SIL bought a used Taycan and it’s got the 150kW booster. She told me in her convo with the dealer that they defaulted to ordering the 150kW booster for all their dealer orders before it was made standard.

Lucid messed up with their 50kW Wunderbox. I don’t know how they’re gonna address that with Airs on the road already but it’s a major problem if they want owners to utilize the Supercharger network.

Recent additions:

Moab, Utah (desperately needed for those using parks)
Chugiak, AK
Mackinaw City, MI (desperately needed for those heading to UP)
Deep River, ON
North Bay, ON

So, looks like rollout continues, despite Ford/GM/etc. deals.

Yeah even though V4s have MagicDock and credit card (tap) readers, they haven't activated that capability in them yet. Not sure why.

Not in person. In the US, I've heard of one open in Oregon and another in Georgia, IIRC. Nevada too.

On a related note...

If I drive up from OC the long way, I might need enough juice to make it worth doing in order to test this out.

If the chargers aren't showing up in the Tesla app as being available for any EV, you won't be able to activate it. As of now, non-Teslas have to activate charging sessions via the Tesla app.

I know, was going to wait for it to show up. And since I have SolarCIty panels, I've had the Tesla app since Tesla bought SolarCity. Just want to go out and see how it goes compared to the others I've had to use. And it's a good excuse to go out and drive!

Cool. I'm still waiting for one close to us in San Diego.
