My Rivian does phantom braking occasionally, not hard, but very annoying.

Sadly, this well intentioned rule will kill a lot of people.

No matter how well engineered, there will be be more accidents from phantom braking than from irresponsible people running into parked cars on the interstate...

I can’t imagine how many accidents will occur in cities. Of course in those cases a death may not occur at least but I could imagine many, many occurrences! I know each life is important but all this for 300 lives a year seems way over the top.

I’ve been in many Teslas that randomly tried to throw me out of the windshield. It’s exciting!
I have heard this and keep waiting for it to happen at random as people describe, but so far, it's only happened when someone drifts into my lane or closes to the line, so as the driver, I can typically anticipate. It makes me a tad nervous when I have someone following closely while driving the wife's car. I never had that with Blue Cruise, and I use it a lot.

Same... I've not had BC phantom brake... nor have I had autopilot phantom brake... lucky? It's not hard to imagine some big chain reaction events if this were to happen at the wrong time.

Well I'll say this for good measure.

Anyone can find out how much I personally despise phantom braking, but in theory if every car is required to do it, the car behind you can't rear-end you if you phantom brake, you will just set off a chain reaction of automatic emergency braking, ROFLMAO.

It's an interesting rule. Presumably in order to implement it properly it will require higher-resolution radars (and / or other sensors) that will not false-positive (much).

Luxury cars tend to implement upcoming requirements in advance (to then brag about it) so I imagine we'll see examples of the technology in action well before the rule goes into effect in 2029 and we'll get a sense for how well it works.

Surely the driver was to blame for attempting to use the system when it was day or night or sunrise or sunset or raining or cloudy or snowy or icy or too hot or too cold or missing updates or the sensors were dirty, amiright? No? for some reason Ford gets a free pass to blame the driver while Tesla has their features clearly marked as Beta with gigantic warnings.

Please show me a Tesla that phantom breaks when no cruise whatsoever is engaged and absolutely no other cars are nearby, THAT was our Mach-E experience!

Genuinely curious about this along the lines of my previous post...

Do you experience this during use of some adaptive cruise or just during regular driving?

During adaptive cruise control. It happens most often when I have a semi truck in the lane to the right of me. It thinks it is in my lane and suddenly slows down. It never happens with a vehicle in the lane to the left of me.

Detecting a stopped car at 62 MPH is going to require a camera or Lidar in addition to radar. That will be the hardest part. Pedestrian detection at night from 45 MPH is also pretty difficult. The sensing will have to be more robust vs. today’s systems that only work at lower speeds.

I've very new to Tesla but I remember a youtube vid from a couple years ago that showed similar behavior. Upon a slow-mo review they showed that a car in the right lane did begin to swerve closer right before it decided to slow down. In that case the Tesla did suddenly drop 5~10 mph at interstate speeds which can be rather jarring but I wouldn't consider it a true phantom braking event unless it just slammed the max brakes.

Not to dismiss your issue at all, it actually illustrates the exact concern with the new rule. If we can expect required emergency braking systems to have the same growing pains as adaptive cruise this is a horrible requirement.

I would also throw in the bonus tinfoil-hat comment here that with Tesla's massive head start on EV tech, this is the perfect rule to give all of their competitors a very hard road ahead. When consumer choice is ICE vs EV, EV is still a tough sell. But if the choice becomes EV vs ICE inflated by the price of mandatory and glitchy auto-brakes, Tesla wins. Politics makes strange bedfellows. Does Walmart support stronger gun control because they care about innocent lives or do they just want to make sure Walmart is one of the few places you can legally buy a gun?
