2021 MME cannot update

Purchased a used 2021 MME Premium. Only 18k miles, sub 30k. Great deal for car of my dreams. Assured HVJB completed and shown numerous documentation for proof prior to purchase. Car runs well.

Sync will not update at all.

No frunk unlock, old media center, no blue cruise , no idea if my incoming Tesla adapter will work.

I've performed a couple of factory resets, and after one reset sync finally offered to schedule updates at least. The next morning the scheduling option no longer worked. Took my car to a certified service center next for update.

Told that out of warranty in spite of low mileage due to time. Ok. Agreed to pay a couple hundred to complete update. Car kept all day. No communication from dealer. Arrive to check and told multiple update attempts failed. Do not charge me. Media controller component is bad?

Find thread on this forum about failed updates. Try most of them. No luck.

Am I just SOL? The car ultimately runs fine and I love it. The media controller the service center brought up would be about $1000, but I could possibly get an extended warranty from Flood for not much more if I came up with the cash. My spouse is out on that though since the car runs fine.

Just bothers me I'm missing out. I've read 21s are not update rich anyways. I'll be very disappointed if I can't use my Tesla adapter which won't arrive until September.

You should be able to use the Tesla adapter, you just won’t be able to Plug & Charge.

You have a documented problem. If you buy an extended warranty, it should not cover an existing problem...

They might be able to at least confirm what your current software levels are.

I haven’t been following the failed update threads close enough, but vaguely remember something about dealerships rebooting the modem to solve the issue.

I would bet that your 3-yr old 12v battery is about to die and not holding a charge well enough to make it thru an update.... try:

1. leave your MME 'on' overnight, with vehicle>auto-timeout setting disabled, HVAC off, and headlights off. This *should* bring your 12v battery up to 100%. Then try an update.

2. have dealership test 12v battery, or get a tester yourself, if it is questionable, replace it.

...and ask yourself, what updates do you really wish you had anyway ?

I haven’t been following the failed update threads close enough, but vaguely remember something about dealerships rebooting the modem to solve the issue.

I had issues with my 21 Select and took it in to dealer. They poked around the modem and things started flowing again. I'd like to be more specific but tech never gave me paperwork on what they actually did and I was just happy to start getting OTAs again .
My question would be why are these modems so prone to shutting down or getting jacked up .
Are theses problems common with other car brands modems or just the Machs modem ?

This. I had an update that just kept failing and failing for weeks. Finally took it to the dealer for a hard wire update. They said the battery was "on the fence" (30 months). Was surprised that Lazy SOB's didn't do the update; but it self updated that night in my garage.

JUST GO REPLACE UR BATTERY BEFORE YOU CHUNK DOWN $1000. It will have to be replaced in the next few months anyway!!!

He posted his VIN and his car is a job 1 vehicle on Sync 20301. He will most likely need a new APIM.

I turned my OTA updates off.... stable at 4.3.4

I have the 20301 software which breaks the update scheduling toggle. So it indeed appears I have no options.

In 2022, my 2021 job 1 MME wouldn't update after a 3 month storage period. The dealer replace the TCU with no improvement. After 3 months of no OTA updates, I contacted the BEV team. They confirmed that the car would not accept any OTA updates without dealer intervention. My dealer needed to contact Ford concerning the problem and they worked together to manually update all modules with any available updated software. This fixed the problem.

If your car won't allow any module to be updated thru FDRS, then it seems the problem is with the hardware that talks to the various modules and the PC.

Just my 2 cents....Many people on this forum know a lot more than I about the MME and updates.

You are correct. Not going to have $1000 to replace the APIM.

If it comes down to it, I can get you a properly programmed APIM for $500 that will be fully plug & play. It is easy to swap out yourself if you can use basic tools.

I would try the dealership route first. My advice: Do not walk in there with guns blazing calling them liars and idiots. Also, do not go in there saying that people on the internet told you this. You will lose all credibility on the spot. I would do what they did and lie.

Tell them your cousin is a Ford tech in another state and you were talking to him about how you can't get Bluecruise to work on your car. Tell them that he checked your VIN in PTS and came across a few inconsistencies with what your warranty repair history says and what was actually done.

Also show this this GSM from Ford advising dealers what the latest Sync software should be for all Sync 4 vehicles. This will clearly show your vehicle is not on the latest Sync. If you get this far and they try to update your APIM, it will fail miserably and they will have to see if they can re-open the work order to get this covered under the work order from February.
