I've had my 2024 MME ER for about a month now and I'm planning a trip to mountains this weekend. This will my longest trip in my MME. I plan on only using fast charging.

I've read up on the many useful posts various subjects (Ford really doesn't make this easy).

From what I gather a good plan of attack is to map out a journey using ABRP then use the Ford Connected in vehicle navigation for each destination -- one at a time.

I normally use CarPlay and I had hoped to use it instead of Ford Connected but Ford Connected will pre-condition the battery for charging. Cold weather will not be a problem but the mid-point charger will be in 100oF heat both coming and going.

From what I understand, ideally the car will cool the battery when outside temperatures are hot prior to fast charging. CarPlay will not pre-condition. I also read you can't use Ford Connected and CarPlay navigation at the same time.

So are my two options?
  • Ford Connected only with battery pre-conditioning
  • Or CarPlay without battery pre-conditioning
Also I will be climbing to 7000 feet. Does ABRP reasonably account for the battery usage going up mountains (Kings Canyon, California)? I plan to have 47% charge (per ABRP) upon arrival in the mountains after charging to 90%. At the destination there are no public chargers anywhere remotely nearby. I will return mostly downhill to a charger with 34% charge. This doesn't account for any day trips in the mountains.

I'm starting to question whether it is a bad idea to take my Mach-E to the mountains. I do have an ICE Challenger that is eager to get out.

Yes, ABRP does a great job accounting for elevation changes. Be sure to adjust ABRP for the temperature, wind conditions and your average miles per kWh at 65 mph too.

ABRP worked great on our trip up to 12,000 feet in the Rocky’s from only 600 feet of elevation here at home.

Battery preconditioning is only really useful if the temperature outside is cool, like below 60F. Otherwise if it’s warm out you probably won’t notice any difference, DC charging will heat up the battery enough. If it’s going to be warm then using CarPlay would be just fine.

I’ve done Seattle to Missoula with Ford Nav and came out spot on no issues. When my subscription expired in ‘26 I may just use Apple Maps as it also has been spot on.

You mentioned in your title "Hopefully with CarPlay". I use CarPlay for all my destinations. It does a great job of suggesting charging locations along the way. The estimated remaining battery level (SOC) it displays when you will reach your destination is always within 1%-2% of the actual SOC. At this time of the year being warm, you don't need to worry about pre-conditioning.

I'm away from my car for a few days so I opened my Apple laptop and planned your route in Maps. I chose San Jose CA to John Muir Lodge. Obviously I don't know your home address and didn't know which hotel you were staying at in Kings Canyon National Park so just chose one. Maps shows my car having a 61% SOC which is what it was when I left it at the airport. However in Maps, I selected the box "Assume 100% Charge" figuring you would have your car fully charged when leaving your home.

You can select the EA charging station pin that maps suggests for more info (nearby restaurants, shopping, etc) and specifics about that charging station. In the planner you can add or change stops if you want like replacing the EA station for a Tesla Supercharger station. You would be able to make it to Fresno for sure so instead of stopping at the suggested Madera station to charge, I would stop in Fresno that way you would have a bit more range once you got to your final destination. Maps in my laptop does not show SOC when you arrive to your destination but once you forward this trip to your phone and you're in your car, Maps in CarPlay will display your SOC at your destinations.

Below is the initial suggested route Maps chose but like I mentioned, you can select the charging stations (and other places) you want to stop at.

OP, I hope you don’t mind a little thread creep but this is an interesting delve into CarPlay and routing for the MME. I’m learning a few things here and scratching my head a little at the same time. There’s some crucial differences in features between Maps on OS and iOS. And one big missing item.

You can set 100% charge on the laptop but not on iPhone/iPad.
You can select preferred charge networks on iPhone/iPad but not laptop.
You can’t select Tesla with adapter on either one.
@markboris I can see the arrival % on my laptop.

Is any of that wrong?

Mike (Tampamike) I didn't see arrival SOC on my laptop but maybe I wasn't on the same screen or area you were in. I'm no longer by my laptop so won't be able to check until tonight.

Those points you made above are correct except on the laptop if you click "options" on the directions window you can choose your preferred charging networks.

Yeah, I did that on my laptop but didn’t get the network selection menu. I only get pick the Mustang or different car and avoid tolls and highways.

Staying over multiple nights in a National Park hotel. I don’t thinks there is any possibility to charge L1 or any other level.
I would carry an A2Z NACS adapter so you can charge at any available Tesla SCs along your route if you don’t have the official Ford adapter.

And carry a L2 Tesla Destination charger adapter (it’s different from the L3 adapter) as there might be some of those at or nearby your destination.

Maybe because I'm running a beta version of Sequoia on my laptop?

Could be. I just wish they had also put the “Tesla plug with adapter” option in that beta … or did they?
No they haven't yet. Not in the iOS 18 beta either.
