IIRC that text only required that it be useable to vehicles made by more than one company. Feel free to provide us with the text that supports your recollection of "ALL".
from the NEVI standards and requirements final rule document under the executive summary:
This final rule enables States or other designated recipients to implement federally funded charging station projects in a standardized fashion in order to build a convenient, accessible, reliable, and equitable charging network across the country that can be utilized by all EVs regardless of vehicle brand.
ALL would mean requiring CHAdeMO connectors. While CHAdeMO is allowed under first year funding in the NEVI Standards and Requirements (see 23 CFR Part 680) there is no long-term requirement of CHAdeMO compatibility.
they danced around the CHAdeMO issue as any good rulemaking does with edge case issues that will hold back other aspects of the program.

ALL would not include Plug & Charge anyway, as most existing vehicles have no Plug & Charge capability, certainly not to the ISO 15118-20 version.

Plug & Charge implementation under ISO 15118 was still under development when the NEVI S&R was published. This is, in fact, part of that industry process to develop ISO 15118-20 implementation.
one slight nit: ISO 15118-2 was published in 2014 and included plug&charge but implementation in the wild (especially in the US) has been a bit rocky. ISO 15118-20 is the latest edition to the full standard published in 2020 that adds some other exciting bits and clarifies issues that were found with 15118-2.

the interesting part of this new effort is to make it more flexible for the consumer. right now we're tied to car manufacturer back-end billing (single cert) and this new effort should open up easier implementation of multi-cert so you can choose your billing options yourself - like maybe a membership program with a charging network provider (whether it's tesla, EA, etc).

This is still pretty striking. Three hundred miles in:

  • Less than an hour for an EV
  • Less than 5 minutes for an ICEV
Still, a step in the right direction.
The super charging station was next to a shopping center(actually on the roof of a Sprouts grocery store which is brilliant) so an hour (really a bit less) went by really quickly.

Spending an hour on an DCFC, from my experience, suggests charging outside of the 0-80 window.
I like the “hop” approach that I heard someone else on here mention. In 20 minutes I can add over 100 miles, stop at a buccees, go to the bathroom get a snack or a drink and before you know it 20 minutes gone. Its a more relaxing mode of Travel.
That works IF you know there is another functioning DCFC within 100 miles of you. Back before my Tesla adapter, good, working DC chargers were few and far between. Once I had a good charging session, I was filling up to 80+%.

A very nice post, but a little late.
There is a new sheriff in town and he is not an advocate of EVs. Expect a fight.
His buddy Elan will make him do this..

I unsubscribed from both EVGo and EA's subscriptions because the plug & play overrides the discounts I'm paying for. So dumb, so frustrating.

I also never let myself get low enough that I need that specific charger - I have twice had outage / software messes that leave me unable to charge with one company, so I have to have remaining charge enough to get to another charger. With me trying to avoid under 20% anyhow, it's not a deal breaker, but it sure is annoying. I just don't feel safe driving far from home any more.

When I am below 50% I use my home charger to get to 80%. I rarely use the apps but I keep them in case I do the occasional road trip..

Discounts work for EVGO Autocharge+, because it is set up between each user and EVGO, the auto manufacturer is not in the loop. I use EVGO Autocharge+ on all three of my EVs and billing is direct to my CC.

I had my 1st Tesla-like charging(at a Tesla charger thanks to the Ford adapter) a little over a week ago and it was amazing. Just plugged in and less than 1hour later had 300 miles. Cost was around $40 and went on my credit card on file in the Ford pass app. Gives me a completely different outlook on road trips! :) game-changer for the EV world.
My last vehicle would have only cost $25 to go 300 miles at todays gas price.

It would have been cheaper in Austin as the city subsidizes our charging stations to get more EV's on the road. Not sure if Houston does that. As little as I need to super charge it doesn't make a difference to me. :)

You can still get the discounts if you want them. You simply activate the charge with the individual charging network’s app BEFORE plugging in. When you no longer need the savings of the subscription, just deactivate that subscription. When it expires, carry on with plug and charge by simply plugging in without using the app.
I do this all the time and it’s not VERY frustrating, just a little. When i’m going on a road trip and I know that I will be using, say Tesla’s network, at least 3 times, I activate the membership rate. You can cancel it anytime thereafter and you only pay the membership fee for 1 month and get the lower charging rate for that month. This is a very common strategy.

That makes sense, but with EA I was having it frequently not activate when I tried to activate with my phone first, having to retry several times.

It's just the kind of hassle that early adopters will reluctantly tolerate, but rental drivers and mass consumers (or people borrowing my car) will reject as a deal-breaker.

You can turn off plug & charge very easily on the app.
