Took delivery on July 29, 2024, just got adapter on Feb 7, 2025; almost 6 1/2 months later.
So then, in the experience of all you who are way ahead in terms of public fast DC charging, which approach gets us the cheapest rates: going through the car’s navigation and using plug-n-pay, or downloading the Tesla app and going through that instead?

If you pay for a subscription with Tesla, you have to use their app to start the charge in order to get a cheaper rate. Otherwise, I think P&C rates are the same as the Tesla app without the subscription. Used to be the Tesla monthly subscription was around $12, not sure what it is now.

Every mode of access provides the same rate, unless you pay the $12.99 Tesla monthly membership fee, which provides a 20 - 24% discount, and REQUIRES you to use the Tesla app.

The cheapest rate will depend on how much L3 charging you do. Do you do it often like 3-5 times a month? If so then yes the Tesla membership will be cheaper. Do you only L3 charge a few times a year when going on long trips? Then no it won't be cheaper.

You can join anytime you like and cancel anytime you like so if you are in the second category just join when you are going on longer trips and cancel when you get back home.

Thanks. In the 6 months we’ve had it, it has only been charged at home on level 2 charging, so the 6+ month wait hans’t inconvenienced us at all. A longer trip outside a 100 mile radius would be the only reason we’d ever need it. I do intend to do at least one DC charge though so as to familiarize myself with the process. Thanks everyone for your responses! :)

used my ford supplied adapter (small one) for the 1st time during the socal fires. found the supercharger that’s adapter compatible through fordpass app. it was literally plug and charge, didn’t need tesla app for anything. got an email summarizing cc charge from ford after. able to monitor charge rate on ford pass app. seamless. would travel more confidently going forward. plus ford kindly reimbursed the charge a couple weeks later to support fire victims.

If I go on a road trip, I will subscribe to a Tesla/EA monthly subscription for that month. After the trip is over I cancel the subscription and return to standard rates.

Both Tesla and Electrify America offer a plan to pay a monthly fee for big discount, EA is $7 for 25%, Tesla is more, but forgot the exact numbers. Doesn't make sense if usually charging at home, but you can activate it for a trip at first charging station, then turn it off from app, minimum 1 month.
