Hi everyone, I’ve been lurking around these forums for a long while because I’ve always liked the Mach E! I used do a lot of research on them but I’ve been out of the loop since I’ve been quite busy

My friend’s girlfriend recently bought a 2021 AWD Standard Range Mach E. It’s a beautiful car but it has slightly over 80,000 miles on it. I’m unsure if it’s ever gotten its batteries or modules replaced, is there any way to check? Since it has high miles, and since she drives a decent bit, my friend is worried about potential pricey battery issues after she passes the 100k mile mark.

I know that the 2021 Mach E’s had a lot of HVJB failures. If her car ends up suffering from this out of warranty, is it true that it’ll be a $2000~ replacement since it’d most likely be a specific module they’d have to replace instead of the entire battery? Is an entire battery replacement something to even be concerned about since the majority of the issues reported are the HVJB? Aside from that are there any other issues that may plague the 2021s to watch out for?

Thank you all!

If you have an OBDII scanner, you can see what the HVB's state of health. Unless the car was really abused with lots of wide open throttle and DCFC, it's probably fine. There are threads on here with owners above 100k miles and no battery issues.

The HVBJB has no battery modules involved. It will be interesting how Ford treats after warranty failures of this high failure part. Had you come here and said you were considering buying a Mach-E with less than 20,000 miles left before the battery warranty ends, I know I, and others, would have said not to for that very reason - an untrustworthy HVBJB. To me, this is true of all years, but a 2021 or 2022 especially, so I wouldn't touch a vehicle that was anywhere near the expiration of battery warranty coverage personally.

My 2022 has 28,500 miles. It has had 2 replacements, 1 due to failure and 1 due to the replacement not being robust enough so they created another version. Since 2023s and 2024s have the same part fail, I'm skeptical that the problem is resolved.

Ah that’s unfortunate but I appreciate the honest answer. I would have advised her if the same thing if I had known she was going to buy a Mach E in the first place but unfortunately the purchase has already been made. Any idea on what the costs are for the HVJB fix out of warranty?

I believe in the past, owners did pay $2-3k to proactively have their faulty HVBJB replaced.

Your strong interest or concern about the large battery or parts/modules of it failing and needing replacement (in any EV) may not be a pressing issue to worry about. While I predict it would make sense to hear lots about that on Facebook or other social networks with less than solid sources for pretty much anything posted about EVs, but IMO not a big or little thing here in this forum. The little battery, the 12V, gets far more interest and concern. I think.

Edit: but agree/understand about concern once beyond the warranty for the big battery in a first generation vehicle.
