This is certainly exciting for those that travel the I5 corridor from Nor Cal and So Cal.

Opened July 4th - half (84) are open and operational!

This Supercharger location is off grid / solar powered which means it's not tied to the power grid - making it perfect for grid down (power outage) situations.

Since I drive that way, I will be stopping by to try it out.....

But currently it says it is temporarily off line ?

Has anyone installed a home, off-grid solar charging system for an EV?

That is very cool.

I had read that only some units were online at this point; maybe that status is conflating the whole site with the as yet unimplemented units? Plug share shows a check in on the 5th.

FWIW my Emporia EVSE can throttle to only use my excess solar production (which is about 6-8kW on a sunny day: I have 20x400w panels). That’s “off-grid.”

I think @markboris fits that description. His house is mostly off-grid. ??
It's been 4+ years since I've had to pay PG&E. When I only had solar, which is a 15.5KW system that peaks for about 3 hours per day at 11.4KW, I could easily run the house which has 3 A/C units, hot tub, 2 EV chargers, etc. However I wasn't happy having to use PG&E in the evenings or in bad weather so I installed Tesla Powerwalls to run the house when there is no solar production. Since then, I've had a $400-$1200 credit each year at true-up.

FWIW my Emporia EVSE can throttle to only use my excess solar production (which is about 6-8kW on a sunny day: I have 20x400w panels). That’s “off-grid.”
I have two Emporia chargers (one on each side of the garage) and I also have them setup to charge on excess solar. Unfortunately, sometimes I need to charge when there is no solar production (in the evenings or winter with cloudy weather) so then I use the stored solar power from the Powerwalls. That is what I call "off-grid". ?

The temporary closure may mean the whole site is down for everyone, or that only Tesla's can charge because of the total number of stalls available is below a certain threshold. Ran into this problem in Northridge, CA last month. Non-teslas couldn't charge, but Teslas could. Previously the site was open to everybody (which is why I picked it).

I have my doubts that the site is 100% off-grid.

This new station sounds great. I am driving San Diego to Oakland in three days. I hope to scope it out and report back.

I'm on the grid, but my system can run the whole house "off grid" during late spring/summer/early autumn.

Got my Rally at the end of March, and thus far have been able to keep it charged exclusively from solar energy.

Could someone hop over and check?
If this had been 3-weeks ago, I would've checked it out. But no more SF to LA kamikaze runs for us until January.

This article explains things a bit better:
https://evxl.co/2025/07/07/tesla-solar-powered-supercharger-oasis/

There's a 1.5 MW feed from the grid, but the majority of charging is supported by the 11 MW of solar, plus the battery backup (size unspecified).

So no, not totally off-grid. I'll be interested to see how well things work during the winter holidays after 3-days of rain and little solar production.

I'd like to see if there was a grid down statewide event if I can still charge since most of the power comes from solar and batteries.....

That would make the ICE drivers incredibly jealous while they could not fill up at gas pumps
