The most recent technical analysis are starting to backtrack considerably from the previous predictions of battery longevity and degradation. Which shouldn't really be too surprising as it catches up to the improvements in chemistry, thermal management, battery management,.........
It's undeniable that running Lithium Ion cells down to 0 (and up to 100) has an impact on the lifespan of the battery. A good BMS and thermal system can minimize the damage but it's still happening. Keeping the battery at 0% (and 100%) is also damaging to the cells.

The individual impact of each case is tiny and so occasionally doing so probably won't be noticeable.

The batteries have safety buffers built in to prevent major damage. 0%/0mi indicated is not true zero as people have eked out a few extra miles below zero.

But even after the car stops and refuses to move that’s still not true 0% as there’s an inaccessible bottom buffer. Because true 0% will permanently damage the battery and can’t be recharged. That’s why if it dies at 0% you don’t want to then let it sit for weeks or months so the battery can self discharge even further. Get it charging ASAP.

With that in mind, one should not make it a habit to run the battery into the single digits even if just for practicality reasons. As demonstrated, power can be significantly reduced when the battery is that low.

If your BMS is out of calibration the car could suddenly jump to 0% and stop even if it was showing 3% on the dash. The SOC both displayed and ā€œactualā€ are just estimates from the BMS as it can’t accurately measure SOC while it’s in use. It’s just counting the energy in and out and calculating the SOC based on the last resting cell/open circuit voltage reading.

I think if we ask the OP if this was a one time curiosity thing, or the beginning of an unfortunate addiction.......

I mean I could be wrong, but the first sentence was "I'm not sure if you all have wondered like I have about what happens.....does it shut off? Die on the spot?"

I recall someone posting about how they didn't trust that the collision avoidance technology would work, so they stacked up stuff and then drove into it.
I’m guess that means it doesn’t work. ?

Ford changed the software to add turtle mode when the battery gets low or cold. So just because you were able to drive past 0% in the past does not mean you'll be able to today. Depends on software level and how cold your battery is.

"Zero means zero" should be your mantra unless you like drama.
Trust me, I don't plan on testing what happens at 0% SoC if I can help it.

I took my 24 Premium X to 0% battery and 2km range. Of course I got the yellow turtle earlier and acceleration was gradual. Red turtle came on. What was scary is that as I was driving around my area to see what happens I came across a scary moment. I was crossing highway on coming traffic and it started to crawl instead of accelerate. This was scary as I mentioned was crossing 2 lanes of oncoming highway traffic. I chickened out to run it to 0 km after that.
Has anyone ran it the 0 km or miles range?
Thanks for posting this, I've always wondered how low can you go on the charge. You just never know, it may happen to any EV

In case of an emergency it can be helpful to know how your vehicle will behave when it gets that low. Years ago I remember taking my mother out to try and do donuts in the snow with her ESP equipped Saab just so she knew the behavior.

Keep in mind in many areas AAA has a DC equipped charging vehicle that can give you a boost to get you moving.

I don't deliberately test to exhaustion, but I have run below E on my ICE car, and run a couple of them completely out. The first time I was in high school and was on a banked curve when the car lost power. I was able to coast around a turn onto level ground and make the turn onto the next road. I lost power against but had enough momentum to caost right up to the pump at the service station I was headed to. As this was where my father had the car serviced, they recognized it. The owner came out and told me they were out of gas. I responded that that meant they would not mind the car parked there until the got more. I then proceeded to fill the car.

I don't plan to deliberately drain to zero. I am quite happy to let a tester demonstrate that on a vehicle I am not paying for. The summary I give is that by the time you have run out, the vehicle has been complaining for some time. I also suggest staying aware of how your consumption is going and responding as soon as you notice it is not in your favor as the change required to respond only get more drastic with time.

I have driven to 1%, not intentionally.

My son's vehicle had a broken gas gauge. It was explained to him that running dry isn't good for the fuel pump. We figured out a safe range, and posted it on the dash. He had a trip odometer displaying mileage since last fill.

He then ran it dry, TWICE. I setup an appointment for a new fuel pump and he paid for it. Costly lesson.
Was there any thought into fixing the fuel gauge?

Yes. It was a one time thing. I am "charge to 85% and run to 20%" guy on the normal.
