echoing this - car scanner notes there is a wide variety of less than useful units on the market.

i went with the ODBLink MX+. in addition to being extremely capable, its feature to turn off when the car does allows leaving it connected and i don't have to pull it out when i want to grab data. it's pricy but does get discounted every few months.
