No not changing the battery accessibility. Many other small tweaks that mass up over time. Ford is trying to do the same, but playing catch-up. Ford recently increased high speed L3 charging from up to 80% of charge to 90% of charge.

Ford increased charging speed by removing a limit. Totally different.

I guess we are looking at ā€œefficiencyā€ differently. To me reducing the energy usage of accessories, while it accomplishes the same goal (more range) isnā€™t quite the same as increasing efficiency. In the end itā€™s semantics.

But hey, if they get you more miles/kWh, goal accomplished.

More proof the epa rating is not a practical consideration for purchase or use of your ev. The cars are just too sensitive to use case.

All those tweaks made by Tesla amount to many tens of miles of range added to the same car model(s) over time. So, its more than tricks - its all in the software and figuring out how to optimize the drive train you've got. They do that better than anyone. In the meantime Ford has increased the range of the MME Premium from 270 miles to 290 miles the same way since the '21 model year. So the little changes and tweaks may not impress some but in the end it matters.

Releasing more battery capacity was Fordā€™s secret.

That isnā€™t an efficiency increase (miles/kWh).

Thatā€™s not correct. Releasing the extra 10% of battery capacity allows you to charge the battery to 90% at Level 3 speed (up from 80% previously). It does not affect the max range at full battery charge - it just lets you charge faster at a Level 3 charging station. If using a Level 2 charger it makes no difference.

Increased capacity and charging speed increase happened at two different times.

And yes, having 91 kWh usable vs 88 did give you more range.

The 3 KWh capacity increase isnā€™t ā€œ10%.ā€

Not sure where you are getting the 10% number from. You seem to be talking about something different.

Yeah we were talking about different changes. When using a Level 3 charger the MME could charge fast only up to 80% capacity, then charge at only at L2 charge speed from 80% to 100%. Now you can charge at L3 speed up to 90% of battery capacity (hence the extra 10%).

Yeah, thatā€™s not what I was referring to with the addition of ā€œcapacity.ā€

Charge speed increase would have nothing to do with the range increase we were discussing.

For Premium AWD extended range - It was 277 for 2022 model. Now it shows as 290.

So 13 miles increase. I heard that it's because of efficient management of ac/heat for 2023 model. Battery capacity is still the same.
The 2022 Premium gets 290 in 70 degree weather. Wonder if itā€™s from a software update

Would love for my 2021 to get some of this range increase love, or even just the extra 3kw available from the battery!

Guess it isn't as important to us anymore though, Lightning is going to be taking over road trip duty and our Mach-e has plenty for around town and commuting use.

Honestly, 270 to 290 isnā€™t much difference for me. I usually fill it up well before then.

The increase in charging speed over 80% has absolutely nothing to do with the capacity increase. They are independent. And the capacity increase is below 0%, not on top, so it only increases your range low 0%, which nobody really wants to do anyway.

Can Anyone with ā€˜23 ER AWD premium attest to the ā€œNewā€ range? What does the GOM say when its reset? Is this all just smoke and mirrors and the high range is all because of the 3.6.2 update which Iā€™m assuming is already in all the ā€™23s? I guess my main question is whether there was an actual change to the hardware/software to improve efficiency other than how the ā€œrangeā€ is calculated and that the 277 EPA range for MY22 was just conservative on purpose
