I've been shopping for all season tires for my 2018 Edge for our wildly varying Minnesota seasons. I came across a designation on some tires called "Three Peak Mountain Snowflake" which appears to provide a higher level of winter capability than other all season tires. I believe some makers offer these in MME sizes. You might want to research them before springing for two different sets of tires (unless you really have an unusual situation, such as living at the top of a hill or driving in the boonies where they never plow).

Those are all weather tires. Different from all season. That is what I was referring to in my original post when I said I was thinking of running all weather tires in place of winter tires. But still have a designated summer tire.

The other angle I would consider is how efficient the all weathers are vs winter. Winter tires are very efficient, which is really important when temps drop in Chicago and you lose 35-40% of your range. It makes short road trips unmanageable.

Thanks for the clarification. I just started shopping for new tires and didn't realize the distinction. Now I do so I will be shopping for "all-weather" not "all season" tires for my SUV. (But even with Minnesota winters, I don't get into any situations where I will need a dedicated set of wither tires because I'm fortunate enough to be able to stay home when it gets really dicey on the roads. My daughter who lives at the bottom of a hill needs dedicated winter tires for her vehicles.)

Summer tires have strict temperature restrictions. They should not be used below 7°C (45°F) and should not be stored at temperatures below -7°C (20°F).
