Anyone driving Route 66 in a Mach-E?

For non motor heads, Route 66, the most iconic road in America, is turning 100 and there are many centennial celebrations happening along the route.

26 years ago, as a young engineer, I was dispatched by General Motors to Oklahoma City one summer to work on improving JD Powers scores of the Chevy Malibu. Being alone in OKC felt very lonely, especially during weekends. So I made a habit of grabbing my 35mm camera and a bag of snacks and hitting the road on Saturday mornings to rural parts of the state, always driving on some section of Route 66. From abandoned oil rigs to old barns and western styled salons, there was plenty to see. Of course, the jackpot was when there’s a classic car show on some Main Street. All in all, I probably have hundreds if not thousands of pics and very precious memories.

Since, I’ve most recently only frequented the beginning and the end of the route: downtown Chicago marks the beginning and is blocks from my office and Santa Monica is one of my favorite places on earth.

So anyone going? What’s the plan? Are there chargers close to the route? If not, how will you manage charging?

Beyond buying a lousy t-shirt, I have to sit this one out, despite dying to do it.

I’m planning a Route 66 and America 250 scavenger hunt for my niece and two nephews (ages 9, 6, and 5). They live in the Springfield, IL area, so we’ll be staying close to there. I’ll be taking the Mach-E. I’m coming from St. Louis and luckily there are a lot of nice charging options popping up in that area and along I-55, including a few IONNA sites!

We drove parts a few years back. Drove by Uranus, because the best fudge is packed in Uranus.

We had a 1981 Chevy Malibu. Piece of crap. Sold it in 1985, traded for a 1985 Nissan Stanza. Never bought another GM car as a result.

We had a quality blitz to improve because we knew we sucked “uranus”. Otherwise, I would have been perfectly happy hanging out in my office in Warren!

I drove part Seligman to Barstow this year as part of Kingman Route 66 event. We usually drive Route 66 from SoCal to Barstow with SoCal MME club as part of Zero Emissions Run.
